A couple people asked, so in case anyone missed out: there are 4 or less of the "#1 reason to Move to Gainesville" FEST-PRESS version left. These will be gone this week. (Full pressing in January.)
Also: The NO IDEA site is hosted by imbeciles, a situation that will be resolved shortly (and permanently, hopefully). If our splash page says the site is down, just call or email your orders or questions as it says there. It's been down twice in three weeks. Doh!

I would love to see Fuel as a double LP. That record sounds so at home on vinyl that it would only make sense. Great idea Var!
It's a very extreme recording in some respects. I mean the WAY is was recorded, the tones of the amps used, etc. I think the LP version mellowed some of that, versus the CD. I like both. Maybe I'm crazy too.
-
Unless making it a 2xLP would allow it to go to 45RPMs, why bother?
45 would certainly give the idea one more check in the "pro" versus "con" list.
Although:
A 22-minute side at 33 would have less response and be significantly quieter than an 11-minute side at 33.
I'm sure there are other threads that explain the physics of vinyl cutting far better than I can in a sentence... and with far more knowledge, perhaps, haha.
-
I don't have a lot of the older LPs, but the only No Idea record I have that suffers from this is the Bread the Edible Napkin comp.
That WAS a 2xLP.
-
Some folks would be all for it. The main concern would be in recouping, I'd imagine. The real collectors and Audiophiles would buy them for sure but I don't know how many that would be. Stuff like Against Me! or Hot Water Music would sell for sure but I'm not sure about some smaller releases.
It seems if you do a 2xLP for most things people want some sort of bonus for re-releases.
I'd support a Jud-Jud 4xLP with etched B-Sides and instrumentals.
AM is like 30 minutes, if I recall. I wasn't really thinking of that one, as it's not super long.
I was thinking more about records like HWM "Fuel". Actually, that's the only one I WAS thinking of, haha. It would be something of a labor of love.

Is it cool or lame to press existing LPs as 2xLPs?
Some of the earlier records we pressed were on the long side, like 45 minutes, but they did fit on a single LP. I'm not sure how much it would REALLY matter, audio-wise, but I have considered pressing select albums as 2xLP at some point. The obvious downside would be the cost of re-cutting the records... and the overall cost would be double what pressing a single LP anew would be. All of that means the fancy new version would cost anyone buying it a lot more than just re-pressing an existing single-LP version.
Sorta silly, perhaps? A big waste of physical resources, perhaps? Possibly cool for pseudo audiophiles, perhaps?
I don't have a solid rationale, other than the idea has come to me a few times over the years. Sometimes that means something. Sometimes it does not. Hmmm...
-- No bonus songs. Just less songs per side. Might still have to be 33 RPM, just louder.
NOTE: My mind is not sharp enough at the moment to make the above note silly/funny. I want it to be lighthearted, yet asking a real question. Zzzzzzzzzzzz...
-- Emoticons, just because: ??? : :-[ :-/ :-* :'(

I think my copy of the Slip LP is a promo... I'll have to check. Weird!

Thus far, all of the RS jackets are the same. There are some variations in the white ink, but it's not intentional. It's just how they come from the printer. We did not keep track of that. I consider that none are better than another at this point. We may switch to a "real" jacket at some point, but who knows? Maybe not.
Since I have been asked: The only major variation is in the test pressings. The first round of tests had a different track listing with two songs not on the final version... and missing at least one that is on the final, as I recall. Otherwise, no major variations.
-
Because I entered that info and i'm a Quicksand NERD!!
Am I crazy, or was Slip only released as a promo only (a la Jawbreaker "Dear You")? I vaguely remember that being the case.
Dear You was not promo only on vinyl. You could buy it in stores for a while on LP, originally.

It is happening and more bands have been confirmed. Very exciting things are afoot. Stay tuned.

sometimes these were advance radio promos... meaning could be thousands made.

Icon brokers via Ross Ellis, though they may use others too.
Imprint prints most stuff in-house, but brokers LP jackets via Ross Ellis. They may also deal with Dorado, but I am not sure.
Both parties would be getting a better price than someone off the street, so they are able to offer a nice service at a reasonable price.
I use Imprint for many things, but go direct for many others. I hear good things about Icon as well.
I have heard that the Czech plant raised prices, what with the falling USD, and that they had massive delays. That crunch may have passed. Dunno.
I have a feeling that the USA plant that either Recordpressing or Pirates is hooked up with is Erika. I forget which was saying they pressed domestically now. Dunno. Both were brokering for GZ in the Czech previously.

Dorado is the best. They are not actually "expensive", they are "normal". The cheap jackets that everyone uses come from Ross Ellis in Canada. A lot of US places broker through them too... There is some kind of Canadian government subsidizing going on for Canada. Otherwise, the Dorado / Stoughton prices would be the same-ish. That said, I use RE for most of my jackets. Dorado for some ancient stuff that they still have films for. Dorado rules, so I highly recommend them. Their jackets are slightly crisper than RE's. The packaging is a little tighter esthetically. But RE is very good. RE = no 10".
That said, I believe Stoughton can do 10" jackets too, but they are also in California and probably the same pricing, roughly (if I recall).
I believe Imprint can do 10" fold-overs, like a bigger version of a 7" cover.
Otherwise, it's palling around with the recession and shipping your $$ to the Czech.

So when is this 5.95 sale starting?
Start at the top of this thread and start reading. When you get back to THIS point... if you have not figured it out... turn off the computer and go outside. Drink some hot chocolate... play some tunes... and start over again.

what does that fay wray record sound like?
I definitely have put out records that I'll have forever that I just shake my head at people for not trying out...so when I hear people talk like that, it makes me want to check em out.
It's $1.28: If you hate it, put it in someone's stocking. Or in their underpants. Either way, it's sure to be itchy.
Jeff is credited for helping write a couple old Radon songs. Helpful?

Talk to Lisa at Ebullition, if you can. She rules.
Kent rules too, but he does frequently act like a grumpy old fuck. That is part of the charm. I endorse him and them.
But if you can talk to Lisa, you'll be happier. Not sure if that's possible, but... there you go.

Anyone know if they're doing the $5 LP sale again this year? I sure hope so. I got a ton of great records last year.
Nope, this year it's $5.95
Oh yeah, and our LPs will likely go to $8 in 2009... so... now's a good time to pick up all the weird old stuff you are missing.

FUCK TOWER.
Seriously.
FUCK TOWER.
They filled for bankruptcy and sold off all the stock they had, which included millions of dollars they owed a lot of labels. They owe us a lot of cash. (And the settlement is ongoing, way too involved to go into... bankruptcy law SUCKS...)
They seem to have sold the website to someone else. So, technically, it's not the old Tower... but still... the stench lingers.
FUCK TOWER.

As someone whose wallet will be affected by this crisis...any idea when?
just waiting from teh green light from no idea. it could be today.
No Idea officially endorses yellow lights. Red and green lights are over rated.

Please be abusive with the "FREE" stuff. Go for it. Makes great gifts. For real. Not kidding.
NOTE:
Fay Wray CD for $1.28? You are a complete idiot if you do not get one of these. That's a fact. Not debatable. For real. Not kidding.

We're on holiday, doofus! Hahaha... Be patient.
Regarding other posts:
This is just a "stocking stuffer" list. There are more things that fall into that category that are not listed, to be sure. Cheap stuff, awesome stuff, overstocks. Do some searches for price categories and you'll find more... like search "1.99" and that sort of thing.

My impression was 1,000 black, with a re-pressing on it's heels that may have already happened. Not sure.

I think they are out there... likely a few floating in stores... it will take some looking, but there were a fair amount made. You can also pester Matt / NI to see if any came back in a return.

DILLINGER FOUR "This Shit is Genius" LP
-- Two new vinyl colors in January, 500 each. --
-- I don't think it was on White vinyl before. That will likely be one of the colors.
-- Slight variations in the art, but nothing major. Small, neat things. Collector nerds will be able to tell the difference even if they were the exact same vinyl colors, which they will not be (knock on wood).
More on this later. Do not bug anyone yet; no one has any answers. Nothing else to say right now, other than, "Who farted?"
