I have this table, but I havent updated the cartridge. The DJ cartridge that came with it still sounds pretty decent after 5 years of use. I will be looking to upgrade pretty soon.

Well you kind of get they're special since you give them to important people who were involved with the release, right? They're special when they're /5 or /10. But the more you press, the less special they become. But yeah, if you're given one for free I can see them as being special. But if a label sells 20 tests to the public, they just become expensive variants.

But what's the difference between making 20 test pressings or making an /20 variant on a certain color...and then putting an outrageous price tag on that /20 variant?

If a label presses only a few tests and sells/auctions them off to raise a few bucks, there's nothing wrong with that. But if a label presses 20+ copies knowing that they will sell them at a jacked up price, that's a little greedy on the label's part. Test pressings should be made to test the sound of a record and make sure everything is ok. The shouldn't be pressed for potential future profit. That kind of defeats the purpose of a 'test' pressing.

There's probable 2 color variation. The variation they sell at the show will not be sold anywhere else (besides ebay)

I agree, they don't have any trouble getting rid of them but that doesn't in any way justify having such a high price. I'm a bit disappointed they aren't picture discs. Why? Picture disks are the worst. I never understood why Europeans love picture discs so much.
