  7. Hey all, On May 18th, 2010, Jump Start Records will be releasing the sophomore album from Philadelphia's own Metroplex. The album is titled "Decade Diary" and will be available on CD/Double Gatefold LP. Today, we uploaded two tracks from "Decade Diary" onto the Jump Start Records myspace page. You can stream "Worst Day of My Life" and "Godzilla vs. Godfather." Check out the link below for the tracks. We will be posting a pre-order and album stream at the beginning of next week. If you're fans of Hot Water Music, Rival Schools, and Sleater Kinney, you'll most likely enjoy Metroplex. 9. I first want to take back the fact I thought you were giving away the full album for free (which yes there are labels that do that and make a significant amount of money)...so you are only giving people a little bit and asking for the rest to be paid to a 3rd party so you can eventually get a little piece? Seems pretty half hearted to me. So why are you going to be out of business? Do you have too much debt or what? I could run a label from my house as long as I never take on debt and sell things at least 1:1 (which would be stupid if thats all I asked for) oh and as long as I never give Virgil my records to sell. I don't see how its possible to not make money. And while you believe that you shouldn't have to do anything to do anything to earn people's respect that's simply not true and a fantasy. There are a ton of independent labels that I support who give away their music for free and prosper and continue to put out amazing releases. Because they maintain the ethics of DIY and keep it real. The Mylene Sheath is a great example of a label that started with one record and built themselves into a pretty big label. They use Gimmesound to allow streaming and download of an entire album. Where the advertisers give the artist a share of money made off advertising revenue and the rest is given to a charity of the labels choosing. Maybe your business model isn't right because you haven't given the customer a reason to buy or you haven't connected with your fans. I didn't know about your label until you started giving away records which seemed like a really great idea. Same with the annual record giveaway by Banquet Records. There has been so much discussion about how to succeed in this industry there is really no reason for failure other than irrelevancy. I like your label and the fact you are trying to maintain relevancy by trying different things to get peoples attention. your post seemed like you were a little pissed I am sure nothing is simple but seriously don't try and alienate people who are just trying to be helpful. I plan on starting a label sometime in the next year. Good luck to you. First, You honestly think that it's half hearted to give away almost 75% of the album? Maybe I'm crazy but, I will go out and buy an album after only hearing a song or two. Everyone has this idea that labels and bands OWE it to the people to just give away their albums. It wasn't too long ago that people were going out and buying albums after hearing two-three tracks tops. Now people want to hear/download the entire album for free and then will THINK about buying the album. A CD from an independent label/band costs what $5-$8? Even major label CD prices have dropped to around $7. JUST BUY IT. It's not like these labels and bands are being greedy, they are simply asking for a very small amount of money so that maybe they can make a little money back to continue putting out new records and helping new bands. Second, If you think there is all of this money to be made, you're definitely mistaken. Pressing an LP alone is about $2000. That is for the records, sleeves, and inserts. You also have to remember that you usually have to pay for recording, mixing, and mastering. That would be close to another $1500. Do you want CD's made? $900-1200? That is a lot of money. That is one release. This money comes from working and saving up money. It hardly comes back from the revenue sales from the actual release. However, it is NICE to see some money from the sales and to help the process continue. Jeremy, said that he doesn't think that we should have to GIVE the album away to earn respect. He didn't say that we shouldn't have to do anything to earn respect. I give respect to anyone that starts a label and spends their money on young bands that are trying to get their name out there. We are a little label that is trying to put out some good releases and stay afloat. If Jeremy didn't have the passion to put out records, regardless of how much it burns a hole in his pocket, this label would have folded up years ago. Third, Yes, there are plenty of labels that give away their albums. Some of them might be fortunate enough to work out deals with advertisers to make some sort of money back. I don't think this applies to the many independent punk rock labels that post on this board. Having the option to download an album for free is a wonderful thing but, I don't think that it should be the new requirement for labels just because kids have completely ripped off all price tags on music anymore. I'm done writing my novel.
  10. Oh the guy giving $5 hand jobs behind the tents? That was Jeremy.
  11. I'm cleaning out my closets and need to get rid of a bunch of shirts. I wrote down all of the shirts I have. Everything will be priced under $10. I'm not listing prices next to each one because I didn't feel like looking over each one and trying to price it. If there is something you like, send me a message and I'll let you know a price. I can send a picture for any shirt that you're interested in. I accept paypal.
