I'm assuming this is a front-wheel drive car so it seems typical to a CV-joint going out. Replacement depends on your skill level with tools but with Hondas (what I typically work on) it is as quick as a 30 minute job. I recommend buying the new cv joint at a parts store and then taking it to a shop to save a little cash since they always markup parts. Part shouldn't be over $200 and labor possibly $75-100. These numbers are on the high side. My civic half-shafts are under $100. As far as safety is concerned, the noise will only get worse and worst-case would result in the joint itself shearing.

My son and I really enjoyed the movie.
