  1. I have good electric and electronic knowledge and one thing that comes to my mind after reading your posts is that you might have a failing ground in your electric outlet. Get a good power bar/battery backup/voltage regulator to another outlet from another wall and try it again. If you do not have a voltage regulator and your electricity is unstable, it can cause so low noise if you pay very close attention. Some power bars have a ground indicator so check if you have one and if it tells you it's grounded. These are just thoughts I had for your problem but it might be something else...

  2. I use this Zoom R16 with Reaper.

Not analog but damn good for the price. Totally portable and each tracks are separated in your computer. Put a 16 gb SD card in there and your good for about 4-5 hours with 8 tracks at once. Way better than my old Yamaha 4 track recorder.

I once recorded a live show with it and it came out great except for one mic which had trouble. I recorded a lot of jams with it and they're all super good.

It does take a bit of time to get used to it but it's so fast and easy working with digital tracks.

  3. I find the automatic functions to be essential to my listening habits. Especially the auto-return since I'm always doing something else while music's playing or I just fall straight asleep. I guess that's just a matter of getting used to it if it's manual but I hate to wake up in the morning and find that the record's been spinning all night on the end groove.

  4. A test press or an acetate is just a by-product of the record-making process. If anything, half the time they sound like crap 'cause they are TESTS.

For acetates I could understand the sound quality issue but please explain why a vinyl test pressing would sound like crap?

I think they should sound the best since they are the very first pressings.

  5. Crazy. I had exactly the same setup for years. I still have the DP300F and the Harmon Kardon 3390, but I bought some BIC Venturi DV84's to replace the Polk Monitor 60s I had. The bass response is much better, and they were way cheaper. What do you think of the DP300F? I love mine.

    Ha! That's a funny coincidence.

I love that turntable! It looks classy and people are always amazed when they see my setup. In fact, most people have no idea that vinyl records are still being made.

I much prefer an automatic compared to a manual. No need for speed box either. I also added a good power bar for the sake of keeping my electronics working if something horrible happens. I think I'll upgrade the cart to a Grado Red next year for the sake of better sound when the needle will be due for a replacement. My speakers were from a killer deal so I got them right away but I know that I'll want to upgrade them too.

I never had any issue with it. To tell you the truth, I tought I would find flaws with time but there is none so far. I've had it for about 3 years now. The integrated pre-amp is not super but I don't need it anyway with the HK. Highly recommended but it seems to be discarded by most folks who shop for a $300-$500 turntable and I wonder why.

  6. You don't need a Mac for all of those except if you need a specific program only available for Mac. Today's Windows computers are just as good as Macs and you can get good software for cheap or free. Sure there are less viruses on a Mac. Macs are prettier. But Macs cost a lot more and they are not better. Truly professional work may require Macs and Mac knowledge but if it's personnal use you're paying too much for a white computer with a shiny logo. The same goes for the "smart"phones.

Some people I work for have a lot of money and they sometimes get Macs but only because they're pretty, not because they're better. In fact, I would guess the return/damage rate of Mac computers are about the same as PCs.

I build computers and servers for a living. Working in computers for 10 years.
