  1. Sound quality has nothing to do with whether it could be a boot or not. A wacky color from "Europe" says a lot more than SQ. The bootleg AEnima pressing sounds good. Obviously I don't know what it is as i didn't press it or have a hand in it's release. Just my opinion until something official is said.

Lots of stores that don't sell bootlegs sell them every once in a while. Indie stores that deal with a lot of distributors are bound to get taken by them accidentally.

Just last week I had to tell the clerk at my local shop that the new copy of The Killers - Hot Fuss he offered to order for me was an "unofficial release". It happens.

  2. I've heard of multiple people in this thread putting the M97xe on the LP60. And no, the LP60 is $79 plus $12 shipping (idk why, should be free shipping, which is what it says), and the M97xe is $65 with free shipping, I believe. And other sites sell it for $55. I have a tiny room, and I'm just looking for a starter table. I want something fully automatic, and there weren't that many options under $300 that I could buy new. I asked for suggestions and no one gave me any, and I've heard that the LP60 is a good starter table, so I got it. Maybe when I need something better, I'll upgrade, but for now, I think it'll be fine. I'm sure it's better than this Sony POS I'm using now.

The cart on the LP60 is not swappable. The arm doesn't even have an adjustable counterweight on it. It's advertised as having a replaceable stylus (needle). That's not the same as cartridge. The LP60 weighs 5.3 pounds according to Amazon. I would consider that table a piece of junk and a waste of money. But, if it works for you and you are happy, that is all that matters.

  3. I have mine. Nice set. No dreaded "circled U" in the deadwax. They redid the gatefold sleeves and they look a bit cheap inside where things were rearranged, but the price on this box set was low so I'm not judging too harshly.

I'll put them on soon. I have been listening to these albums on CD lately, so i'd have a good frame of reference to the comparison.

I also have an original OR so i may see if one sounds better than the other.

  4. Hello,

I just picked up a cheap Technics SL 220 for $10 over the weekend that didn't come with a headshell, cartridge, or stylus. I was wondering if it would be pointless to put a Shure M97xE cartridge on it or if I should stick with something cheaper since the turntable is on the lower end of things. Also, as far as headshells go is this a decent product?

I'm running it through an Onkyo tx-36 receiver and JBL speakers. Thanks for any information and helping me out.

I've had a Shure m97xE for a couple of years now and it's not bad but just a little weak, not punchy.

I've been much better off with a Ortofon 2M Blue which should be in the same price range.

What? 2M Blue is $199, the Shure cart is $55 from Amazon. The Shure cart is the best cart under $100.

  5. I listened to both S/T and TCatS yesterday. S/T didn't sound as good as Colour, but i remembered that it was recorded in a cheap studio on a small budget, and had a different mastering engineer than the rest of the reissues. It still sounds fine, but not as clean, dynamic and powerful as Colour, and I suspect the rest of the Bob Ludwig mastered reissues. Can't wait to hear One by One.

Here's something i noticed. Neither of the LP's i've listened to seemed to be centered very well. I cant tell if the actual grooves were of centered but the label certainly is. Anyone else see this?

The M97xE is a great cart for the price on Amazon, and no one should ever waste their money on a cheaper cart, no matter what table they are putting it on. If you don't like the table, or it ends up being a dud, you can always move the Shure cart to your next table. I don't know about headshells, so maybe someone else can chime in on that.

  7. My local store called and said they have one on hold for me already. This stuff is not as restricted as April RSD stuff, so if you have a store that you are friendly with, see if they can hold a box for you.

I will say though, that even though I am very excited for this, I'm keeping my expectations for these pressings quite low. $115 for 6 double LP's screams United. Not only that but it's very possible that no special vinyl specific mastering was done and they are simply the CD or (hopefully) high res files pressed onto vinyl. I may email Roadrunner this week and see if they can give me any info. Although, in this case, ignorance may be bliss.

  8. I got mine yesterday. It sounds good but it didn't blow me away the way CtS 2LP did.

Musically the album is definitely the weakest Mastodon album. It does have some great songs and some great moments, but after hearing it a few times streaming and now finally on LP it is not even close to my favorite, CtS, or any of the other albums.

  9. haha, thanks. ya. actually, the old record player was a crosley i bought 12-13 yrs ago when i couldn't find anything else and i didn't get around to replacing it until now. i'm not a huge audiophile so it's not a big deal to me to have something fancy, but after spending a lot of money on records, i wanted something a little better.

i got the pioneer last night and am pretty happy with it.

thanks for the simple explanation of what i need. for now, i have it hooked up to the aux inputs of a bose stereo my mother-in-law gave me last month. i'll look into the speakers and amp via craigslist or amazon after the holidays when i have more money.

Cool. Glad you are enjoying it, and glad to hear you have something to listen to it with.

Don't be afraid to poke around a bit and find out more info on turntables and what makes some better than others or ways to improve what you already have. I listened to vinyl for a long time knowing very little about turntables, but once i did just a little research a whole new and very cool and exciting world opened up. And don't believe the hype, while you do get what you pay for, you don't always have to spend a lot of money to build a nice playback system.

  10. i'm going to look at a pioneer pl-990 today from someone on craigslist. it has a built in pre-amp and i tried looking through this thread but i am technologically stupid. can someone please tell me what else i might need for this turntable? like speakers, right? anything else? it has its needle and cartridge and i'm at a loss for what else i might have to save up for. i'm kind of upgrading from a shitty record player that i've had for the last 10+ yrs.

The pioneer is a very budget turntable and i don't know that i would be much of an upgrade from anything. Although, i guess i can think of a few things i'd want less. Like crosleys or portable players. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I feel like there are great used deals on vintage tables and great resource on the web to care for them without spending too much time.

You will need an amplifier and speakers to complete your set-up. The Amp doesn't even need to have a phono preamp as the pioneer table has a built in one. craigslist can help you with both the amp and speakers. In fact, if you can find a great deal on some speakers and an amp, do that and put more money toward a turntable purchase.
