  1. VC Book Club First rule of book club: Chuck Palahniuk is overrated (I am so hilarious). Second rule: Please hide spoilers if you're ahead of the reading pace. Book #1 - February-March 2016 California - Edan Lepucki (amazon.com or amazon.ca links) Timelines: By Saturday February 20: Chapters 1-6 By Saturday February 27: Chapters 7-12 By Saturday March 5: Chapters 13-18 By Saturday March 12: Chapters 19-24 (p.s. obviously these aren't set in stone. What it mostly means is that if you're on same pace as the reading timeline, you can post without hiding in spoilers. Those who are behind should perhaps refrain from entering this topic until you've caught up to the reading pace).
  2. Since we already did music and movies... I figure we can use some of the similar rules as the movies: - can include a series as one entry - graphic novels count - I suppose comics too? - no order necessary - for movies, it was suggested no documentaries. Should we do fiction only for books? I don't really care either way - I know there are definitely folks who read only non-fiction. I'll add mine shortly.

    Cookbooks?

Anyone here enjoy cooking? I'm looking to expand my cooking horizons and collection of cookbooks on hand. Anyone have suggestions of cookbooks that they have a like? Two that I've been referencing quite a bit lately are Sean Brock's Heritage and Rick Bayless' Authentic Mexican.
  5. I just responded in the thread about the new book from John Darnielle (the Mountain Goats). I'm a pretty avid reader in general, and I am always curious to see how musicians can take their songwriting craft into writing a book (that is not specifically about being a musician). Here's my brief list of books I've read by people who are otherwise musicians. For now, it's predominantly fiction, but please add your own (and your thoughts about the books if you'd like). Josh Ritter - Bright's Passage (love the songwriter, book was very beautifully written, but a bit boring) John Darnielle [Mountain Goats] - Wolf In White Van (great read - fits in with his oeuvre of music, as well as standing out on its own) Joe Pernice [Pernice Brothers, Scud Mountain Boys] - It Feels So Good When I Stop (loved this book; seems a bit overwritten at times, but well structured and enjoyable) Frank Portman [a.k.a. Dr. Frank of Mr. T Experience] - King Dork (hilarious and engaging book for young adults; relive your awkward teenage experience including making up as many bands with friends as possible) Colin Meloy [Decemberists] - Let It Be by the Replacements (33 1/3 series) (by far the worst book I've read in the 33 1/3 series; self-indulgent and poorly written) Dave Bidini [Rheostatics] - On a Cold Road / Writing Gordon Lightfoot (I like his non-fiction writing more than his music; a really talented writer) I'm sure there are a whole lot more. What have you read?

  7. Hey all, Longtime lurker, first time poster. I wrote a book concerning the history of radical (anarchist, socialist, etc.) politics in 1980s American Hardcore Punk. It stemmed out of work I did during my Master's thesis and became a labour of love. If you've got the time/interest, please check it out. http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/acracypress
