With black Friday sales I wanted to finally get a turntable setup to play my vinyl.  I'm not really smart with all of home stereo systems and I've been researching trying to learn and understand more.  Thought I would put that out there in case I misspeak or refer to something incorrectly.

Primarily I'm looking for a setup as I said to play by vinyl with a secondary role as a playback system for mixing my field audio recording.

So far I have ordered the Project Debut Carbon DC and M-Audio BX5 D2 monitors.  And I believe the next piece to the puzzle is to find a receiver.  It's almost looking like I may have to look towards the home theater type receivers?

Can anyone recommend a receiver that has line level outs so I can use powered monitors?  All the receivers I find have speaker level outs.  I would also like a receiver that I can eventually connect a subwoofer.  Budget would probably be in the $300 to $500 range.

Thanks for any help!

I'm on the mobile so I'll be brief. There were two reasons I selected BX5.

1. I plan to use them for a playback system for mixing audio recording that I do with the understanding I would obtain a more clear representation of the actual recording without much flavor added by other type speakers.

2. The price point. I found these thanks to torres's other thread at an unbelievable $149 price.

what understanding do you have that makes you think powered monitors are any more accurate than passive?

I think he meant to compare the BX5's to other powered speakers.

Also, speaking for myself, my Yamaha RX-V592 Receiver has rca outputs for power speakers and a subwoofer, and it features a phono input too. I can run the BX5's without needing too much bass coming out of them, and have the subwoofer cover any really low end.

I tried previously to set up passive speakers with my receiver, but it was a bit of a hassle (the amplifier within the Receiver would not give me a stereo sound, it turned everything into surround sound). I got some cheap powered speakers a while back that worked fine through the rca outputs, but they have too much bass and treble, and sound a little too harsh.

I didn't buy the receiver, it used to be my parents', but they had no use for it anymore. Rather than attempt to sell it, or just purchase a pre-amp, I thought I'd put it to good use and try to build my set up around it. I thought that with a good turntable (Debut Carbon DC), good powered speakers (M-Audio BX5's), a run of the mill subwoofer (Sony SA W2500), I should get good use out of the receiver. The receiver may not be considered high-end, but would it  limit me from getting an "entry-level audiophile" sound from my setup?

Slinch thanks for the quick reply. I'll have to look at those. What was leading me down the receiver path was the eventual addition of a subwoofer. If the phono stage won't work for that it may at least do what I need for now. Thanks again

You can also add a sub without having a receiver. Basically, buying a receiver without planning on using it wit a surround set of passive speakers is a waste of money, for any other use you might need there's a specific piece of equipment that does it, and does it better.

I found one solution albeit an expensive one.  I decided to go in an entirely different direction after initially just thinking I would build a somewhat simple playback system to mix recordings, with the added convenience of a TT.  Instead, today, I received a pair of beautiful rosewood Wharfedale Diamond 10.2s and a Marantz PM6005 to use as my primary system that I'll expand on over time.

I'll probably just keep the BX5s as part of a second system to use with my computer to mix recordings as originally planned.

Torres was correct about my above comment, sorry about my poorly worded statement.

Thanks for the comments.

That's a nice haul, congrats!

Slinch, thanks! The wife come in from work as I'm unpacking things (still waiting on the TT to arrive) and says, well, I was thinking of getting you a "record" player for Christmas, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been anything you'd have wanted.  I just smiled and said that was a sweet thought. lol
