chubbler108
Does it make a difference in sound quality or anything? Just wondering why there are different speeds. I just got my Minus The Bear - Planet Of Ice and was surprised to see that it is 45rpm.

xfedaykinx
i believe 45rpm has a higher fidelity due to the fact that each bit of music covers more surface on the vinyl, therefore allowing for higher quality. or something. i aint no expert. brentoage
45RPM is, obviously, faster and the sound quality is less than 33RPM. wrong. it's the other way around.
Guest scriptedrain
wrong. it's the other way around. the audio information is spread out across a larger area, and therefore more space is allotted for the information = higher quality. Fixed haha

That's true. That's why a lot of box sets put out by sound labs and such come with everything on double LPs at 45rpm as opposed to single LPs at 33 1/3. xfedaykinx
i only like 33s better because my raggedy old belt falls off after each play of 45s. as soon as i replace the belt ill be able to listen to jane doe again without having to reattach the belt after each side. there is a reason that record is on two-45rpm records, it sounds brooootal

skumbucket
Just wondering why there are different speeds. format war was it rca vs victor? or was victor always aligned with rca? i can't remember...
ronniethebear
smallholes 45 rpm does not necessarily = big hole. I prefer 45 because of the sound quality.
Guest scriptedrain
I own two 2xLPs that play at 45rpm (possibly more, but 2 that I can recall): Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice and The Blood Brothers - Young Machetes.
chubbler108
I'm still going through the 25 records that i got in the mail. I found another one that is at 45rpm: Cannabis Corpse - Blunted At Birth.
captainmorgan
I have lots of love for 12"s that play 45rpm
brentoage
i recently got a descendents 7" (I'm The One) and the a-side is 45rpm, and the b-side is 33rpm. i think that's the first record that i own with varying speeds.
sgoodcore
I have a No Idea Record like that. I think its the Ringers/Ampere 6" but it might be something else.
markalark17
I have 7"s that have labels saying they play at 33 rpms, but really play at 45. Not that that really has anything to do with the topic.
steventangent
format war was it rca vs victor? or was victor always aligned with rca? i can't remember... You know what's crazy, since I have been thinking of getting a tattoo of a Victrola, I can actually answer the shit out of this question. the Radio Corporation of America bought the Victor Talking Machine company in 1929. As for the format war, there were a couple of different formats prior to the war, the most common of which being the 78. In the late 40s, Columbia introduced the 33 1/3, and RCA Victor introduced the competing 45 shortly thereafter. I think the speeds actually have something to do with the electrical currents and motors and some kind of magic voodoo bullshit. I don't know. slymer
witches with dicks LP is a 45 12". I thought the singer had a real crazy voice for about 5 seconds. Put the record on, sat on the couch and was like "whoah!!! I'm not sure if I like this".
skumbucket
that does make it weird. also, the "young machetes" record: my lady likes it better on 33.
