it was just a different game back then. the real interesting thing i notice when i watch older games (even as recent as the mid-90s, but specifically the 70s and 80s) is how big the court looks. players were smaller and less athletic back then. they couldn't cover the same amount of court as players today. also, defenses were less complex back then so most teams were all bunched up in the paint unlike today.

if you watch a basketball game from 1950, a game from 1980 and a game from 2010, it's like 3 different sports are being played. the worst player in the NBA today would be one of the best players in 1950. the game (and, more importantly, strength/conditioning/offseason workouts) has just progressed so much over time that it's almost impossible to compare time periods that far apart.
