PITTSBURGH and BOSTON info request

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm travelling from Italy to Pittsburgh and Boston during late March/early April, it's a short trip to meet a friend and relatives.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest record stores / skateshops / nice little area to walk around.

I've been in Boston a few times before and I remember Newbury Comics is quite big to browse, I know Armageddon has a new shop in Cambridge, and I remember a few more shops in Cambridge/Harvard. Last time I was there Allson was becoming quite popular, is there anything there? I'm sure I visited a place which sold some vinyl and rockabilly/punkrock type clothing, but can't really remember the name.

I've never been to Pittsburgh before so any suggestion (besides the "don't go there") is appreciated.

Thanks! Marco

boston...if you in kenmore sq (right next to fenway, many buses, and the the green line train run to kenmore sq) theres a place called Nuggets. some old dewd runs it, a lot of older stuff, grab bags, cd, dvd, 8X10's, posters, vinyl. and of course like you said newbury comics which is a few blocks from Nuggets. Also in Allston on Commonwealth Avenue, theres a place called In Your Ears. Super cramped in there, a lot of stuff, low ceilings, never know what ya gonna get, cool dewd there too. its right next too a Coldstone Creamery and art store. watch out for hipsters in Allston.

also good food in allston is Spikes. good hotdogs and chicken fingers. and right next to spikes Sunset Grill and Tap.

you can get from In Your Ear to Nuggets easily with the 57 Bus, can even walk it, if its nice out.

There are stores in various parts of pittsburgh called "The Exchange" it's pretty much a glorified pawn shop for used cds/video games/dvds. They have some vinyl (depending on which ones you go to) but nothing that has amazed me. Their used vinyl is pretty sweet, but their prices aren't always the best.

Here's some Pittsburgh info:

Don't really bother with the Exchange, you want to go here:

and here:

http://www.jerrysrecords.com/

This place might be closed by the time you arrive, sad:

I'm not familiar with skate shops, but I know a few exists. Here are some areas you want to check out:

- The Southside: This is more happening in the evening, as the place is basically a ton of bars, but there are a lot of shops to checkout in the day. Just walk up and down, while you're there stop at Primanti Bros. -- this is THE Pittsburgh place to eat. Sandwich + fries and coleslaw, wash it down w/ a Yuengling.

- The Strip District: Basically a ton of markets and street vendors, good food all around to eat, maybe not the best stop for you though.

- Lawrencevile: I live here, say hi. Hah, couple of cool bars and restaurants. There's a record store down here too 720, they focus on hip-hop more so.

Oakland: This is the college part of town, not really too much to do down there, but there's a record store called Wicked Discs:

What type of food do you like? I can recommend a bunch of good places to eat -- basically all I care about anymore haha.

Allston suuuucks.

haha...its either drunken BU students, or total fuckin hipsters, everywhere. I lived on comm ave on the corner of harvard ave, police all night at the joshua tree, i like brighton.

Yea, Brighton is better. More professionals. I live at packards corner for a while. Taking the T was the worst with all the BU kids.

thanks a lot for this! I've a friend who has been living there for 4/5 years now, he lives on centre ave, but I'd love to get to the city with my own knowledge :)

Food, almost everything, honestly I never understood how Europeans can complain about food in the US, that might be different but I always had fun eating around over there. Drop me your top 3 of Pittsburgh if you see this message, Primanti Bros is already on the list :)

I'd like to see Kevin Seconds on 27, if you happen to be there and hear some Italians in the crowd I'll get you a drink!
