GMay
Do NOT go with a lesser known because they have cheaper prices. They give you much more headaches. Stick with the majors, Budget and Enterprise. I would recommend Budget over most because they run a ton of specials.
BuzzersonKillwell
No secret tips but most companies have weekly rates, plus online specials. They all seem to have the same specials, like $25 plus up to 25% off depending on model so in most cases the company with the cheapest base rate is your winner. I just rented and have some leftover coupon codes if you want I can post them. Maybe someone works in that industry and can give some insight but the prices vary wildly by provider by date. So check all the majors.
hipsterasfolk
I go where ever they tell me to go when I rent, I've had no hiccups with Enterprise ever! I've used a bunch of rentals in my 22 yrs Plus they normally have a better selection of cars for bigger guys
somethingvinyl
Enterprise is great. Goto their website, enter all the specific info (date/time pick up and return info). Click on all of the avialable options near you. Find the cheapest price, even if it's 20 miles away in the next town, make a reservation. Then the day before your trip, call the branch you would actually like to pick up the car from and ask to transfer your reseveration over because you can't make it over to the other location (or a better excuse). If you live in a big city (you do) and your closest branch is close to a touristy part of town or an airport, the prices are dramatically different. Summer rates can be as low at $20 a day.
