AdventureIsOutThere
Looking for a cheap, new slip mat that I can replace my shitty stock pro-ject one with. I don't need any fancy designs, black is quite alright. I just want something that won't come up with the record every time I take it off the table. Any input is appreciated! Thanks. randomfortunepa
I have been looking into the Music Hall MAT Decoupling Cork Turntable Platter Mat. I haven't tried it out, but it seems like what you are looking for. You can find it for about $30 if you shop around. I don't think that is the "cheap" you are looking for though. Have you thought of upgrading the platter to something like the Acri-Plat? Just some suggestions...I am interested to see other people's input as well because I hate that damn thing too. Haha. AdventureIsOutThere
Yeah, I'd love to get the acrylit platter but it's out of my price range... I'll probably look into the cork platter but it too is out of my price range for what I'm looking to spend... Thank you for the input though! ajxd
You're not going to replace the stock felt slipmat with anything better for under $30. Raise your budget... save an extra month, don't get Starbucks, give a rando a handy, etc. AdventureIsOutThere
mac1
On a MMF 5.1, I started with the original felt mat, tried the Music Hall cork mat and finally solved my problems by purchasing the acrylic platter. The MH cork mat is very thin and really did not solve the static problem for me and just left me frustrated. Even considered double-stick tape under the $50 cork mat but ultimately just purchased the platter. Never looked back.
ajxd
I thought the 5.1 came with a glass platter...?
IanRees
I got this anti static one a couple weeks ago that im pretty happy with http://www.ebay.com/itm/400300587001?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
mac1
My ultra cheap solution included trimming 12" square cork mats from Home Depot. About 1/4" thick they are heavy enough not to lift when the record is removed and cost for a package of 4 was $10. But then after screwing around for a day or so i just purchased the acrylic platter. ajxd
Here's the problem. You're using a 1/4" piece of cork, that's roughly 6.4mm... Slipmats are between 2-3mm. This can throw off VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle). Causing stylus degradation, record degradation, and a lot of noise issues.
mac1
Absolutely agree with your response above, ajxd. Acrylic is the only true solution. And the standard MMF 5.1 has the felt mat making the acrylic platter an upgrade.
ajxd
So weird the MMF5.1 went to a non-glass platter. the MMF5 had glass platter. They also make acrylic mats. Much cheaper than an acrylic platter. And you get them in 2mm or 3mm. Not through Pro-Ject/Music Hall though.
