I sold off my hand me down reciever, and need a new one (and speakers!)

Recommended Posts

Well technically what you posted reads as you want to keep it over $500 :)

But yeah, since you already have a separate phono stage, the best sound you can get for that price would be a set of active speakers (if you don't mind the minimalist look).

A pair of those A3Xs is over $600, but you can easily find them used for closer to $400. With some luck you can even find a pair of A5X around the $500 mark. Hands down the best sound quality for that budget.

What are my other options? I wouldn't mind picking up a receiver and a nice set of speakers for a bit more so long as it'll pay off & last in the long run. I was having a hard time deciding on a receiver as it was, the last thing I need is someone telling me I don't need a receiver.. :)

Well you don't need a receiver, honestly. :) Read this part why.

If you're buying new, and you want a separate amplifier and speakers, you're looking at $650-$700 minimum for something worth buying. Of course you can buy cheaper, but the quality drops so drastically, I cannot recommend spending less. I'd start with a Yamaha A-S500 and the Epos Epic 1 for a total of $750. Or wait for a refurbished Marantz PM5004 from amazon instead of the Yamaha for a total of $550.

you know what? I bet a Pioneer Elite A-20 paired with the Pioneer floorstanders afrom Best Buy would impress a lot of folks here and be a huge upgrade to a lot as well. The A-20 is hard to find, but Ebay has it for $279 NIB, and I know the speakers can be had for $250 for the pair, so i'm sure you could buy new and keep it close to $500.

Depends on what the setup he's coming from was. The A-20 is a solid little amp, on par with something like a Nuforce Icon, but those speakers (I'm guessing the SP-FS52 model) are pretty bad. Definitely better than some logitech computer speakers, but far from what a RP1/JD-9A setup deserves. Especially when the price difference is so small compared to the difference in performance. I agree that a lot of people would be impressed, but at the same time, a lot of people would regret the purchase a few months down the line.

Getting a chance to test any of this equipment in a store would be best, though.

Yeah, they go up on amazon's warehouse deals for around $200 pretty often. There was actually one up for $180 until yesterday.
