Some real clunkers on here but a few gems as well. Really dig the studio cut of 41 Shots but I like the live Joad better than the one on here. Down In The Hole is great and Harry's Place kinda sounds like Knopfler. Probably won't listen to about half this record ever, but will definitely keep a few songs handy.

Wait, hang on. Since when is being anti-system NOT cool???
-
Bummed to hear that. The few songs you guys put out there are some of my top played. Awesome stuff.
-
I was gonna bump this thread just to reiterate how awesome this album is. Gets better every time I listen.

Thanks everyone. I just shot them an email to see what's up. I didn't get a shipping confirmation and the order page doesn't show a tracking number or anything.
Edit: Well sonofabitch. My order just didn't get sent out, and now they're out of the pink/white, so I have to settle for an orange/blue. Sucks, but I'll just be happy to finally have this.
It looks ten times better than the pink/white in my opinion.

Unless those also were in single sleeves with stickers on them.

Opinions... Everyone's got one.
Yeah, including you.
They championed their fav bands a little too much without doing anything special of their own.
Disagree with this. I think they've done pretty well combining their influences into their own thing. I've always liked how much Brian wears his influences on his sleeve and uses them as the setting for his own music. I mean he lifts whole lines from other songs. It's not like he does that thinking no one would notice. It's the point of most of his writing that all those guys are the soundtrack to what's going on around him. That's pretty much what the entirety of The 59 Sound is about.
That said, he obviously boxed himself in writing that way album after album and it's no surprise that it became a hard thing to get away from in terms of people expecting it. And it never helped that he always describes his own stuff as sounding like other bands. I remember in the lead up to American Slang he described it as sounding like The Jam and The Who and a few other bands. And it really didn't at all, so it seemed kind of strange that he would put that sort of weight on it when he could have just as easily described it as its own thing. It's lame to hear him getting this pissy about it now when he did it to himself.

How do you come into a thread without reading a single thing before you post? Mind boggling.
-
Brian comparing himself to Ryan and Gaslight to Whiskeytown is ridiculous. Ryan has a lot more talent than Brian has. Covering pop songs with an acoustic guitar does not make you a singer/songwriter, it makes you like every other person on youtube with a fucking ukelele.
Well he's never been as good as Springsteen, Westerberg or Strummer either, but that's not really the point.
-
Does this mean more or less songs about Maria ?
Probably the same amount. They've been giving interviews about redefining their sound since 59. And essentially, all of their records sound like Gaslight, except for maybe Handwritten, which sounds like Gaslight-lite. Not an edge to be found on that one.
-
Interesting interview addressing the near break-up of the band starts on page 74: http://issuu.com/redbulletin.com/docs/1213_nz_lowres
Not sure if it's just the way it's written or not, but that's a whole lot of "I" and "me." Closing with "I know I can do what I want with these guys."?
I know it's always essentially been "Brian Fallon and the Gaslight Anthem," even in the eary days, but there used to be a lot more camaraderie.
Still doesn't sound like things are going that great. I still say one more album. If whatever blues riff record with slide guitar and piano and John Bonham "grooves" he's talking about doesn't go that well, he's going solo. "Ryan Adams couldn't make 'Heartbreaker' with Whiskeytown" is a pretty ominous statement in my opinion.
-
And I PMed Agua about it, explaining why I didn't sell to him. Banquet had reds for 80 bucks, so if he didn't want to get it there, clearly he wasn't willing to spend 80.
That's a pretty dick statement. I'm pretty sure he said back when they went on sale that he missed them when they went up.

-
If he did in fact gloat about flipping here at VC, I haven't read about it.
You just quoted him at the top of the page doing exactly that ("Thanks to you guys, I sold it for $100 :)").

Wow, unreal. Thanks a lot for posting, Ive been meaning to pick up that Tender Thrill record for so long now. Such a great album.

For every bad experience I've had with SRC, I've had a good one. But that's not counting the number of other ridiculous stories about this place or the lies they often tell or the purely shady business practices they unashamedly engage in sometimes (ie flipping their own variants on Amazon).
I'll only ever order from SRC as a last resort or in a case like this where they post about a record they have "limited stock" of and I want to jump on it before I have the chance to do any more research. But these people are a gamble.

Interesting. Looks like they fixed the sticker issue for good then.
Or, SRC told some kid that if he sits in the back and peels all the stickers off perfectly, he gets a shot at buying a red copy for $75.

I think it was a bonus track to the 59 sound in japan or something like that.
iTunes as well I think.
Studio version is great, as is the live Park Ave one.
-
A bunch of acoustic gaslight? easy pass
Bingo. I'm sure I've heard these versions in particular, but even if not, I've heard enough acoustic Gaslight to last a lifetime. Not great.
Cool to have some of the other songs all on one record (in fact I remember people saying they wished for this record instead when the 7"s were announced) but still, pretty lackluster. It would have been cool if there was some stuff on here that hadn't been previously released.
-
That sounds more like you kinda like it, but never wanted to pay the 15 bucks that it normally costs. It isnt like it was some out of print record that routinely goes for 100 dollars you were getting a deal on, everything in there store is pretty much in print still.
Yeah. Not directed at Ry alone, but this is the one thing I really don't get about this thread. People are getting so bummed about not getting records that I think they could, for the most part, go get almost anywhere else. If you want it that bad, it shouldn't matter that it was on sale...
-
Got mine yesterday. Sticker said green and the record is definitely green. Also feels pretty heavyweight.
-
The Epitaph reissues have been pushed back, he said that in the other thread.
-
Unless he's trying to go the way of Neil Young vinyl, I'm sure this will be cheaper.
Too bad they're not doing a 7" for RSD. I like the stuff he's been putting out the past few years on both RSDs and the timing definitely would have worked this year.
