  3. i'll even paypal you .50 cents but you have to send me back .01.
  4. oh yeah!! btw, if you dont check out or like this record you might be a pinko commie bastard. just sayin'.
  5. new metroplex cd is in and we'll be posting the gatefold lp up for presale shortly!
  6. NIN? trent reznor? really? how much money do you think has been spent on that band, and by trent himself so that he could give away a donation based release? what the majors created for NIN and radiohead is easily seen as a business model for future release and upcoming artist, but you're missing the fact that major labels have spent literally millions of dollars to make NIN and radiohead what there were before they decided to go that route. this just doesn't work, and is ridiculous when applied to smaller labels.
  7. I first want to take back the fact I thought you were giving away the full album for free (which yes there are labels that do that and make a significant amount of money)...so you are only giving people a little bit and asking for the rest to be paid to a 3rd party so you can eventually get a little piece? Seems pretty half hearted to me. So why are you going to be out of business? Do you have too much debt or what? I could run a label from my house as long as I never take on debt and sell things at least 1:1 (which would be stupid if thats all I asked for) oh and as long as I never give Virgil my records to sell. I don't see how its possible to not make money. And while you believe that you shouldn't have to do anything to do anything to earn people's respect that's simply not true and a fantasy. There are a ton of independent labels that I support who give away their music for free and prosper and continue to put out amazing releases. Because they maintain the ethics of DIY and keep it real. The Mylene Sheath is a great example of a label that started with one record and built themselves into a pretty big label. They use Gimmesound to allow streaming and download of an entire album. Where the advertisers give the artist a share of money made off advertising revenue and the rest is given to a charity of the labels choosing. Maybe your business model isn't right because you haven't given the customer a reason to buy or you haven't connected with your fans. I didn't know about your label until you started giving away records which seemed like a really great idea. Same with the annual record giveaway by Banquet Records. There has been so much discussion about how to succeed in this industry there is really no reason for failure other than irrelevancy. I like your label and the fact you are trying to maintain relevancy by trying different things to get peoples attention. your post seemed like you were a little pissed I am sure nothing is simple but seriously don't try and alienate people who are just trying to be helpful. I plan on starting a label sometime in the next year. Good luck to you. i think you, and to a larger extent, a lot of younger people out there don't understand anything about how records are made and paid for. if we had the means to record our bands and post the music up for free download this would the easiest, cost effective way to create, record, and release music. but that leaves a lot of holes that need to be covered in regards to distribution as well as ripping the creative side of making records completely out, which to me, is a huge part of the heart and sole of releasing records in the first place. kevin's numbers in regards to recording are even low by many standards. how much do you think a studio like the blasting room costs per day? even a discounted rate of $800 a day is inexpensive for that place. other good studios like clay creek in delaware (none more black, boy sets fire, paint it black) and skylight in fairless hills, pa (jena berlin, a life once lost, zolof the rock and roll destroyer) cost $300 to $350 a day. even when rushed, a 14 track release in a studio like that is going to take 14 days to record and mix, so you're talking $4000 to record, and we haven't even gotten to mastering, artwork, and pressing, regardless of the format it eventually ends up on. maybe i'm old fashion but to me the artwork and the physical product is very important to a release, and another outlet of expression for a band with their music. digital formats go a long way of completely destroying the aesthetic of what records actually are. so, is my business plan bad because i'm spending too much money on these bands? by many standards i'm not spending enough, and if you noticed lately, independent labels are dying off one by one, and people thinking they're owed something before they even support a band or label is the reason why. keep thinking this way. soon enough your favorite record label will be gone and you can chuck it up to just bad business plans. having other advertisers that i don't know or approve of selling their products on a download page just so i can make a buck on my record by giving it away and recouping from those ad sales is fucking stupid. why don't i just sell ad space on my next lp jacket sort of like what soccer teams do with their jerseys. that'll help out the problem. the real problem is, even with giving away 75% of the record in a free download, people aren't supporting the band or the labels by even giving a cent for what they're downloading. so far there has been over 1400 downloads in less than 4 days on the jump start site and NO ONE has donated a dime. see a problem here? you can literally download 75% of a record for free, and if you like it now donate $1 dollar for an entire 320k high quality download of it directly from us or go one step further and buy a $5 cd, 7", or $10 lp that gives you even more, something tangible, and something the band and the label has put their hearts into. i'd rather fail due to irrelevancy than be forced to think that because of the internet people are suddenly free to steal what is not theirs. if you like a download, support the band and the label or they won't be around much longer releasing records, it's a simple as that. don't believe me, check out the thread about the new menzingers record and what toby has to say about that. building up a band takes a lot of time and money. this money has to come from someplace. if you're not paying for music, in some shape or form, you're stealing from poor musicians, plain and simple, and that's fucking lame. spend a few weeks on tour, sleeping on floors, literally eating shit to survive, and then explain to me why no one buys music anymore. i guess these things make me and our bands irrelevant. do me a favor and start your label. after 6 months when you haven't seen a dime of that release back than you can talk to me about irrelevancy and how you're justified in taking what doesn't belong to you. am i pissed? no. do i want fans like you. absolutely not. your words on a msgboard aren't helpful. paying for music, even when you're given to choice to actually pay less than what it's worth, is what is going to be helpful. that's being relevant.
  8. i take that back, 1 in 1000 downloads results in a sale. i can show you the statustics if you'd like. the idea that we should have to give anything away to earn anyone's respect is ridiculous. even with giving our records away we're probably going to be out if business soon anyway. the day music costs nothing to make is the day that logic is sound.
  9. new astpai is recorded, mixed, and mastered. just waiting/working on the artwork for that. it's scheduled for an august release. one win choice is hitting the studio in late may/early june. we have it as a tentative november release if all goes as planned.
  10. this also goes for new releases that are coming out soon, which include new full lengths from metroplex, astpai, one win choice, and safety!
  11. So, we've made a huge decision here at Jump Start HQ. Instead of fighting the never ending tide of downloading that has become so commonplace with music these days, we're going to fully embrace this new found freedom and now allow you to download all your favorite Jump Start releases for FREE! That's right, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Just so you know that we're not completely crazy, in most cases we're not giving the entire record away, but most of it, and are reserving exclusive and extra tracks that can only be found on the CD, LP, and through our digital distribution retailers like iTunes and Emusic. What does that mean? Well, for example, if the record in question that you wanna download has 14 tracks we're going to give you 9 or 10 of them for FREE. If you like what you hear we hope you'll support the band and the label by buying a CD, LP, or the rest of the tracks from our digital partners. Or, you could also make a DONATION of any size to help us continue to release awesome music from some great bands. Simply click this link below you'll see everything you need to start downloading! http://www.jumpstartrecords.com/v3/releases.html HELP KEEP INDEPENDENT MUSIC ALIVE! We thank you sincerely for your continued support of this label and our band's efforts. We're slowing putting as many of our titles up for download so please bare with us....it's gonna take some time. My eyes are already going crazy having spent the better part of yesterday working on getting as much up and available as possible. Thanks!
  12. i think we started drinking at 10 am each day.....such a great idea, yet the worst idea. i think by 1 am on saturday night i drank like a case of beer.
  13. i had to make up for your lack of coming to HOH and the fact that we were pinning all our hopes on making money on this trip on all the BJs you'd be giving truckers on the way down to florida. kevin day = fail.
  14. yeah, i was (jeremy). hopefully you hit up the tent or ran across me earlier each day, because i sure was drunk as shit by like 7 pm every night. so much fun, but such a long, long drive home. we press our vinyl at a few different places, but most of the time we go through united.
  15. your best bet is to just you tube them and send the links to the band. i'm sure they'd really appreciate that.
  16. i don't know, but i heard it's essential to have some of this mythical thing called money to put out records.
  17. most of the LPs will be up for multiple months because we haven't released that many records on vinyl. also, don't expect new releases to be available for this 'sale' anytime soon. while it's cool to get free stuff and we like sending it out, it's ok to buy a record from time to time. a lot of people are ignoring the new ASTPAI seven inch, which is only $5 and you get a digital download with it that has all five songs on the EP. if you're paying $8 - $10 for shipping on six items it's not a bad idea to try picking up something new that you might like as well. just a thought.
  18. that comment just made my friggin' weekend. i actually pointed out the irony of kevin 'modeling' that tee to him as we were taking the picture.
  19. Check it out right here: http://www.jumpstartrecords.com/mp3downloads/dotm Also, be sure to pick up a copy of the brand new 7" from Astpai, The Scavenger. Limited edition two song baby blue-ish vinly comes with a download coupon for the entire Digital EP which includes three additional tracks not found on the 7". http://www.jumpstartrecords.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=JSR&Product_Code=JST-061&Category_Code=001 Stream the whole record while you're at it too! That's it for this month. Thanks for everyone's support! I'm pretty sure all but 2 orders from last month have shipped, so don't be afraid to keep Kevin busy for the month of March!
