  1. my band Shun just put out this new single, it's a cover of Drake's Hold On We're Going Home. The video was filmed on our recent Spain tour.

  2. Derek is right, though. This forum has proven to be the most diverse and up-to-date source for news on vinyl due to the community-driven format. Most of the vinyl blogs I once read/followed have gone inactive. This guy here from Germany (it's in English though!) is doing a pretty good job, mostly on hardcore/metal stuff with lots of nice informative photos (not that poser kind): rather few new releases, but many personal recommendations that are always worth taking a listen.

    maybe "flipping" is not the right word. I believe it's a reaction to the fact that loads of stuff is just bought to flip. By raising the prices for more limited stuff potential aftermarket flippers have to chip in a bit more themselves in the first place, which may or may not put at least some of the off. I also see the point though that the increase in price will just be forwarded to the aftermarket anyway ("this release has been more expensive from the start!").

    It's a difficult topic but I believe when done with some minor markups on really limited stuff it's alright. And nope, Relapse charging $10 (or 10€ :D) more is not considered minor.

    Interesting thought. Probably, with that song at the end - and especially with that phenomenal final climax on the lead guitar - this one could have brought the album to a 'Pecan Tree' tier conclusion. I'll keep on digging the song and its placement anyway, as its triumphant tone kind of sets the mood just right. Also, this album still keeps getting better and better. Couldn't help but spin it a handful of times today only.

  6. Tired of Tomorrow was produced and written in a way that was supposed to make it as ethereal as possible - this new release seems to be the antithesis to that approach. The whole instrumental and vocal delivery is a lot more relentless now, you can basically imagine them thinking "fuck it, let's just do it this way" while recording. To everyone that does not want to listen: if you hated Zero Day, that is not going to be the only moment on the album that will put you off at first. I am confident though that it will sink in with most people, and there's probably not many bands that could pull it off like this.

  7. absolutely blown away by the concept! Just watched the German version (my mother tongue) and I have to say, it was surprisingly intense - they definitely put a lot of effort into it, and even the lip syncing seems to fit the foreign language really well (the title only suggests German audio, and I'm not sure if they went to the lengths of shooting the same video for each respective language). Despite minor changes I can't really follow (og: "America's pool boy" - German: "Amerikas Posterboy") they pulled it off pretty nicely.

    Most of the times American's singing in German sound rather stupid but this one is different. Now I'm all ears for more upcoming material (and a part of me wishes they'd do that for the whole album!).

    If you adjust the pace the main lead melody from Near can be played over Night People just as well (except for the bridge in the latter). It wasn't meant solely as criticism though, I don't think it's that blatant and it doesn't annoy me or anything. Just an observation.

  9. grabbed an EU indie yellow/clear today, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it's not a mere translucent pressing. My records at least have a considerable amount of "yellow smoke" inside the vinyl, which definitely looks really cool! Also, the visual presentation and packaging are top notch, as was to be expected from this band. Have just started spinning side A, but the pressing is really nice sounding so far.

     

    As for the music, my concerns from a few pages back have been almost completely erased over the course of a few digital spins in the last couple of days. I still think it's gimmicky and cheesy at times, but more of the kind that was the outro from "Come Back" on New Bermuda (in other words: pretty awesome). I dig the album as a whole a lot more now! My criticism for "Night People" still holds up at least a bit. I can appreciate the little atmospheric break it brings to the second half of the album, but the track in itself is still rather uninspired (and also more or less the same chord progression as "Near" repeated time after time).

    in my opinion there is absolutely no chance the final release/mix will differ from what we have heard so far. Even though Blue Line Baby has slightly more sonic fidelity compared to Zero Day, there will only be slight differences between this and the remaining songs. They've been marketing this rather strongly so far, but switching the entire mix on the full release would still be a little too bold if you ask me.

    On the other hand, I'm sure everyone will settle with the sound when we hear the album in its entirety. I believe they know what they're doing.

  11. well, even the NPR article from the stream says that Honeycomb is "the album's most ferocious bit of black metal." I have similar feelings about the song, and to me it's the closest they get to the Sunbather sound (even though, it still sounds more like New Bermuda in my book). It might have something to do with the songwriting approach. Like I mentioned back when "Canary Yellow" dropped as a single, a lot of it seems gimmicky and not flowing together very well - which is something that they absolutely mastered on Sunbather for instance. Yes, there are still blast beats, there are still similar vocal styles (anyway I do appreciate the clean singing that is introduced!), but how it all comes together is less akin to Sunbather and more akin to New Bermuda, which is also reflected in the production.

    edit: not to say that any of the elements would be bad in their own regard, that would indeed be down to individual taste. But I find the difference to Sunbather to be quite noticeable, and you pretty much gave a list of reasons why that is the case.

  13. after one listen I can say that it is better than expected. "Near" strikes all the right chords for me with its atmosphere, even though nothing much is happening throughout the song. "Night People" however is probably the most unnecessary and out of place song they've released thus far - in my opinion (before the keyboard warriors head out again) it just doesn't go with either the album feel nor the sound nor the flow. It might change with multiple listens, though, it's not going to keep me from listening again anyway.
