I bought this for $10 some time back. It's absolutely worth $10. I'm not a giant Beck fan, and colors is far from my favorite, but it's worthy of $10 (especially if someone actually likes it).

It's not what I'd want from an official Beck studio album, especially one that serves as his first "fun" studio album in 10+ years, but it's a pretty damn fun little party album in its own right. It is one of the rare occasions where I hated the singles and then, when heard the album, it all clicked into place and I 'got' what they were supposed to be. I wish Beck would release more albums like Midnite Vultures (I'll settle for more albums like Modern Guilt) and that Maroon 5 and all those dumb top 40 rock/pop/party bands would release more albums like Colors.

  5. I would not be surprised if they pulled the plug on the sub before anyone can ditch it.

It's tough to sort out what happened but, at some point, the label fired their previous mail-order people and a lot of planned improvements for the sub (or, at least, the public communications about the improvements) went away with the previous mail-order regime. There was a 'state of the label' update from Topshelf in August but they only vague allusion to the yearly sub was mentioning the firing and how the situation had messed up a lot of plans for them and created a ton of stress. If they started back up, fixed whatever the behind the scenes issues were, and built off from the good stuff they already had going, I would consider signing up again but, otherwise, if it's a quiet continuation with Awesome Distro at the helm, I am out I think.

What blows my mind is that Rivers has always been so stressed about being "popular" and making music that does well commercially. Yet when they finally got a producer with a brain and went back to a more rock driven/pop rock sound with the White Album they get nominated for Rock Album of the Year at the Grammys!!!! Rivers - if you want to be considered cool - make more of that!!

I view Rivers as a professional pop songwriter who was in a popular alt-rock band as a teenager. Except, instead of fading behind the scenes and professionally writing successful cookie cutter songs for Fall Out Boy and Maroon 5, etc., he performs and releases those songs using the same band name that his teenage nerd rock band used. I do think Green and Maladroit and some of Make Believe were born out of that 'detached songwriter' process but I feel that they were still sincere in trying to connect to what the band was. At some point, Rivers freed himself of that constraint of maintaining the Weezer identity and went full rogue. Unless the Black Album pulls an unexpected switcheroo, EWBAITE and White Album look like they'll go down as a weird aberration.

EWBAITE is interesting because it was co-written by a bunch of different folks who played in decent rock bands in the 2000s and it doesn't really sound like 'classic Weezer' but it's fun and varied. And it sounds like White was the result of the producer nudging Rivers to squeeze out some Weezer-like rock songs and commit to a rock focused production style for the recordings. All I can think of is that, like the rest of the music industry (Grammy nom aside), Rivers probably feels like straight up alternative rock music is dead and he did what he wanted to do with it 20+ years ago.

I lied about seeing y'all at the next record.

How scuffed up are people's discs that are requesting replacements?  I checked all of mine and they each have a little bit of visible scuffing on them but didn't seem to noticeably affect playback.

All my records except Vol. 3 were scuffed or had minor warps but that stuff doesn't bother me much and I pretty much expect it with AK records.

Vol. 3 had 2-3 deep scratches on each side that caused loud clicks on each revolution though. If you didn't hear loud clicks or see deep scratches, you are good.

Buying records for over two decades now but never experienced probs like with these guys.

    Hands off! Seriously!

Wrote multiple emails (5 in total over a 2 weeks span) but got no response at all.

Today I wrote them again telling them how disappointed I am....and: Surprise! They answered claiming that they haven't received any email from me.

    Hands off!!!:

"Weird. My email must not be receiving messages" is sometimes sort of true, since messages can be missed or misplaced, but I always enjoy how common this response is anytime a client or company ignores your messages. We had a wedding vendor who didn't respond to our calls or emails for long stretches and each time they said "Sorry. Our email is having issues." :P

  9. The word from AKR:

Hi everyone - we pressed this through IRP in Jersey. Here's what happened. We had some major issues with hole sizes on Avalanche, so IRP started manually hole punching. Good idea, except that they didn't always blow away the shavings from the punches. In some cases this causes the shavings to fall into the jackets, which can on occasion scratch the record upon removal.

On the 20 total units I QC-ed, only 2 records (out of 100 total records) had this issue, so it's not common. And otherwise this is a fantastic sounding release.

But if you have any issues out there, we'll always stand behind our vinyl as always. So feel free to email us and we'll send out a replacement disc. --John at AKR

Is anyone else here having a hard time getting a full set of mint discs?  I've been through 3 sets now from Amazon and all 3 have bad disc threes.  Scuffs, scratches, etc.

My disc 3 is also badly scratched. I emailed AK about it a few days ago and haven't heard back. I wonder if they're going to have to do a mass replacement like they did for Vol. 7 of the other set.
