I mostly shop in the SF Bay area and East Bay. I love punk and hardcore and don't think I could find a better area outside maybe new York. I also hit a lot of the bigger chain thrift stores in the shittier areas and if I get lucky leave with stacks of amazing classic rock.
I think if you take the Bay Area as a whole there are tons of amazing shops to make the trip worthwhile
-in the east bay besides amoeba and rasputin 1234go and contact are great visits
-in the city asides from amoeba there are some great shops on valencia st. along with thrillhouse (amazing punk) on mission, tunnel (i'm biased its my shop) way out in the sunset, and on haight rooky ricardo's (i dare you to find a better 45 selection) and groovemerchant (for that white whale soul/jazz record you've been searching for)
-in the north bay Red Devil in San Rafael is great for punk, reggae, blues etc while further north the Last Great Record Store in santa rosa always has great stuff.
oh and its all in california.

Did the Autumn Defense reissue materialise?
got a bunch in stock at Tunnel Records in San Francisco. More than we wanted to be honest. Spun it over the weekend and it sounded great though!

We just posted our leftover inventory at Tunnel Records in San Francisco-

just pull down the music icon and sort by most recent. Got a few some folks may be searching for.
Best of luck!

nice, i'm sure i'll stop by sometime this weekend.
do you happen to have any used r&b, soul, or hip-hop?
Yeah we have a fair amount of used R&B and soul, but limited hip-hop at this point. Great first few days too! lots of the good stuff is flying out but more on the way next week-

good info here -
I actually just opened a record store in the outer sunset of San Francisco 2 days ago! Would love to see a VC'r as well.

but when I'm shopping which is still often outside of the odvious, Amoeba -
1234go on valencia is great. Stranded right across the way has a ton of hard to find more obscure items. Thrillhouse for punk. And if one were to make their way to my shop take some time and go to Western Relics on Irving St. Small shop but expertly curated.

Has anyone seen The Black Angels release pop up anywhere? Only thing I want.
me too! I asked amoeba SF yesterday around 2pm and they stated they only had 5 for the shop. Guessing the initial run was smaller than expected based on that allocation.

Anyone been? There is one this Saturday - trying to decide if its worth the drive and time, can't find much information about it online aside from their very sparse website-

Just got an orange from the US site......

how do they do it??! Another scorcher. Wow.

Same story as the guy above.
I also use to download thousands of random artists on Soulseek back in the day. I've heard enough old stuff to realize most of its not for me. This month's album sounds like lots of the stuff you can find buried in a box at a thrift store for a dollar.
I'm all for the club exposing me to music I'd otherwise not find or give a chance on my own , but id prefer it at least be new and relevant and polished. The vocals on the tracks I've heard are pretty rough , and I can't really see the appeal of the band at all other than the obscurity/cool factor. I can see a lot of lost customers this month.
no worries to each his own! Hopefully in the future a club like VMP could have several different genre's, specially areas to choose from for their monthly subscription. In the same way some don't like releases like this others, like myself do not like to retread stuff that i've heard countless times in other formats. Until then discogs and eBay are our friends. I'd just hate for a club like this to simply cater to mass market releases instead of exploring a bit.
-
Yeah he was a big part of their sound. I'm guessing based on both Martin Courtney and Alex Bleekers records the sound gets a bit folkier, which isn't necessary a bad thing. Their most recent solo record still give me tons of optimism for the lineup.
-
Such a fan of this release. Personally i've had more than enough of the 90's early 2000 releases of the last year. Obscure challenging areas are what a club should be about! And if your not familiar with this band no worries, the zamrock/late 70's african rock is great! Well worth exploration.
-
this lineup is pretty stellar though. I think this is the 2 drummer lineup? So loud and powerful. Was at 2 of the 3 shows and they rocked!

Interesting, were they labeled by color? I might swing by Amoeba in Hollywood and see if it's on the shelves.
Yeah they had small stickers that indicated white/grey/black. All handwritten.
-
Amoeba SF has both white and grey along with black. At about 11:30 they had 3 white and at least 10 grey in stock.
-
Yes and Yes. and yes and yes. and yes.

I 2nd that. All his Deerhunter-stuff is among their best songs for me and Lotus Plaza is all wonderful on it's own.
I third that. Love everything they do together and if you haven't yet check out both Lotus Plaza albums.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did a castle face live on this tour. They haven't been in San Francisco for 3 years if memory serves me right, and their playing the Rickshaw Stop where a bunch of that series was recorded. Fingers crossed.

I am selling my copy of the new Wand record, Golem. This is the Orange variant, I believe 200 total. Record was never played but opened to confirm color. Includes poster. asking $30 shipped to your door in USA. I'm open to trades too.....

Hey VC land-
I own a small record store in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco called TunnelRecords. Anyway, we are hosting a record fair at our neighbors cafe; Streamline on Taraval on August 11th from 2-7pm. Should be a fun time with a DJ + food and beer specials. We are looking for anyone who wants to sell, no fee to participate. Should be a fun time!
