  1. Going to check out that Hull article for sure. The amount of LPs I have that I can't stand to listen to is mind boggling. Mastering is tough enough now add bad/rushed pressing practices and fuck it can get ugly.

I aslo 100% back Reaper as well for your DAW. I switched from Logic to Reaper about a year ago and will never go back. I'll drop the flashiness of Logic any day for the functionality of Reaper.

I also use the Focusrite 18i20 and it's a great piece of gear. After taking recording more serious I splurged and bought a Great River MP-2NV mic preamp and it's the best purchase i've ever made. It was expensive but it instantly transformed my recordings. I still run it through the Focusrite I just bypass the Focusrite pre's when using it but now I have two channels of the Great River and 6 off the Focusrite. I'm the opposite of a lot of people here, I enjoy maxing out the drum mics. top and bottom of snare, kick and sub kick mic, 4 room mics but it's mainly because I don't sample anything after so I need a bit more to work with. The more options I have the happier I am. But if you're going minimal, the room mic can often be the most important for me at least in getting I sound I like.

On that note though I could use a recommendation for more experienced people here. I'm looking to assemble my next piece and I'm wondering if I should go microphone or a rack compressor? I'd be looking to spend between $1000-$1500, right now I have 57s, 58s, an SM7B, Rode NT5s, Rode K2 large diaphragm tube condenser, Beta 52, and some MD421s. I'm thinking maybe a ribbon microphone? Any suggestions?

  2. What type of bulb was it? 10 years ago I'm guessing standard 60w bulb? If it was too bright before (meaning like even in comparison to the other bulb in the room it just shone too brightly, not too bright for your taste) that likely means you had an imbalance somewhere on the circuit. Likely scenario would be you lost a neutral connection somewhere and all your voltages on the circuit got put out of whack.

There are two things I would guess. Has any other electrical work in the house been done lately? Someone working in the panel or even something as simple as changing another lightbulb somewhere else could have effected the circuit. Or, and more likely here, there was a problem with the neutral connection on your transformer outside and hydro fixed it and now your circuits are balanced again and the bulb is getting what it actually needs finally.

Or you just have a fucking ghost

  3. YO, old ass bump. What is everyone listening to now? Hit up recommendations as I'm getting a little bored with what I listen to now. Specifically, looking more for fictional/storytelling podcasts.

Risk! - People tell true stories they thought they'd never share. Some are hilarious, some are super dark, huge spectrum of different sexualities, ethnicities, walks of life etc. They have a bunch of Best Of episodes, great starting points to see if it's for you.
Startup - Follows startup business, cool look into that world
WTF with Marc Maron - This podcast is huge, assume most listen by now, great interviews

Entitled Opinions (About Life and Literature) - some real highbrow nerd snob shit but has cool topics every now and then, recorded out of Stanford

Turned Out a Punk - Damian from Fucked Up interviews people on how they got into punk. Cool when it's indie rock people or acts etc. who used to be punks/are secret punks.

Radiolab - One of the biggest podcasts period, assume everyone knows but if not, get on it

The Tim Ferriss Show - Guy interviews people at the top of their field. Investors/teahcers/chess champs/etc. and tries to breakdown what makes them elite. Has been meh lately but lots of good episodes back there.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Another of the podcast heavyweights. Listen to his 8 part WWI series and be wowed

Puck Soup - Hockey podcast on the Nerdist network. Comedy/hockey/pop-culture.

Marek vs. Wyshinski - Another hockey podcast. More up on news stories, more insider information. Good perspective.

Limetown - Fictional, storytelling podcast. Sci-fi/mystery, really cool classic style radio storytelling.
