rhythmgtr5
I've never had 2 copies of the same record in different weights - do heavier copies sound better or are they made heavier for durability reasons?
mcm1610
I'm no expert, but the extra weight adds extra depth. The greater thickness allows the grooves to be deeper so a "fuller" sound is obtained.
melikecheese
Got a copy of Dark Side of The Moon on 200gr, it sounds better then the standerd weight pressing, much better. In fact, it sounds 100x better then the CD. Also have Big Come Up (Black Keys) on standard and 180, the 180 sounds better to me.
mclz
yeah its heavier so it sounds better since its less flimsy i have a 180 gram rancid 2000 and a regular and the 180 sounds much clearer

Not correct. They're pressed with the same plates as standard records. The grooves can't possible be deeper when they use the same stamper. The 180g makes it more durable, and there's something involving the vibrations that occur when the record is on the plate that makes it more stable on 180g vinyl. The grooves are only DEEPER if the record is shorter and it can be spread out more. So the shorter the record, the deeper the grooves. The HEAVIER the record, the more durable and less vibe you get. mcm1610
Oh, I guess you learn something new every day. And that's why I'm not an expert.
willbratt
Greater density = more inertia = better sound.
monk0nuggets
As far as I can tell, they use a different pressing process if you want 180 gram. I checked into many different plants, as I wanted to do 180 gram, and most plants that offer 180 gram specify that there is a different process.
