scotterson
i have heard horror stories of drives from just about every brand. i have used western digital and lacie with no problems. i think what it comes down to is having important stuff on multiple drives, not just a computer or just a hard drive, because problems are always possible. sonix
My hdd of choice is Seagate. I've never in my 17 years of computer service seen a seagate fail on me. I've only dealt with a handful of externals.. and I know they are a touchy bunch, so I wouldnt keep all the data only on them. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148341 heres just an example. What I usually do is check the interwebz till my eyes bleed. Being informed is the best defense against getting the shaft in the computer world ;]

akross
Western Digital pretty much sucks. Anyone who hasn't had one fail on them is certainly lucky. I use Seagate for all my internal/external drives.

controlthebleeding
I have used Lacie for all my external drives. They have a new one that has a hdmi output and remote so you can watch tv shows on any hdmi tv. sorta like a portable media player, but it's a external hard drive too. pretty fucking sweet.
