enjoyadrian
Does anyone use this program? Is it easy to use and get the hang of? Any good tutorials for a beginner? I'm trying to get a job with a newspaper that requires me to know photoshop, which i feel comfortable with, and quarkexpress, which i've never used. Any help would be appreciated. boizee
My paper used to use Quark, but we moved to InDesign about two years ago. I found it pretty easy to get used to, especially since the paper will likely have some sort of templates already in place.
benchwarmer
quark used to be the industry standard for page layout/design. they sort of missed the boat when things started to change and now indesign is the standard. If you've never used a program like it, it might be hard to get the hang of. I may have an old book laying around if you want it.
enjoyadrian
do you think it's possible to get the hang of the basics of quark in a week?
dcstrange87
do you think it's possible to get the hang of the basics of quark in a week? It took me a while to get used to it at my school's newspaper, of course my skills at a computer besides microsoft office are limited lol, but once I did it was a breeze. kirbypuckett
do you think it's possible to get the hang of the basics of quark in a week? I'm sure if you studied hard and played w/ it a lot during that week you could gain general knowledge.
mattstrike
Ugh, Quark. I take it they will want you to know the latest version? I'd honestly say a week is pushing it - but I wouldn't let that stop you from applying for the gig. Focus on typesetting, pagination, creating/working with templates, layout, etc. Don't sweat the fancy stuff - a newspaper job (they still have those?!) is most likely going to be more production than creative. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
holy shit, people still use quark? I haven't heard of quark since my class in college that I took for it in 2001... seriously. I thought that program went by the side when InDesign took over
partysmasher
I can't believe places still use this, indesign shits all over it for layouts. However, i understand you have no choice in this, though but i think you could get the very basics of it in a week. Try getting a text book or learning off the net, pick a page of a magazine/newspaper and try to replicate it. When i interviewed for my job i told them i'd used indesign before and knew how to use it on a mac, i knew neither but managed to get the basics in a few days and went from there. Now im shiiiiiit hot! good luck dude!
keymanmk
I was the head designer at my university's newspaper. When I came in, they used Quark Xpress... but I convinced them to switch over in inDesign when CS2 came out. They gave me a raise for simplifying everything so much. :-)
littlejonnyhormone
Fuck Quark, it's not that tough though. Pretty standard Adobe-type style.
tanukichu
Quark is the devil. I haven't used it in over a year. InDesign is lightyears better If you have a really good grasp on InDesign you should be able to pick up on Quark easily
mattstrike
Funny story about Quark: An old friend of mine is the CEO/Owner's niece and wouldn't even give her a copy when she needed it for school. The greed runs straight through the whole company.

kgry
1. Draw a box in center of screen. 2. Leave plenty of room on both sides for action. 3. Press Shift-Option-Command-K to get original alien. 4. Repeat above sequence at least 5 times. 5. The new alien appears randomly, usually after 5-12 tries.
