Tallahasse or Get Lonely are my favorites

i loved the intro to the review pitchfork did for Get Lonely

Darnielle: Have you heard the new album?

Me: Yeah, I just got it.

Darnielle: What do you think?

Me: I've only heard it a couple of times; I'm still processing.

Darnielle: Do you have a girlfriend?

Me: Yeah, she's right over...

Darnielle: I hope she leaves you. Then you'll understand it.

All Hail West Texas

Easily one of the best albums of all time.

This is where I ALWAYS tell people to start.

They also have a new record coming out Oct. 6 that I actually just stole off the internet last night. I haven't listened to it yet, though. I didn't even know they were coming out with anything new so that was a nice surprise.

Good luck with that. Dude has put out sooooo much music.

Yeah dude, he's put out a record a year for like the last 9 years. The exception to that was 2007 but he put out two in 2002 (I think). Plus there's like 3 collection CDs with 20+ tracks each on them plus a bunch of EPs and splits.

My old computer had 200+ Mountain Goats songs on it and it wasn't even close to being all of his released material. Plus there's tons and tons of demos and live bootleg material. It's pretty ridiculous. And honestly, some of it can be kinda hard to get into so you might get burnt out on it before you even get to some of the really good stuff.

There are also two main "eras" of the Mountain Goats. The early stuff was just John Darnielle and was very low-fi, with no overdubs or retakes. That era culminated with All Hail West Texas, a masterpiece in my opinion, and then they put out Tallahassee and from then on the albums were recorded in a proper studio and with more instrumentation.

Solo/Low-Fi era

All Hail West Texas

Coronoer's Gambit

Ghana (collection)

etc.

Studio/band

Tallahassee

We Shall All Be Healed

The Sunest Tree

Get Lonely

Heretic Pride

Life of the World to Come (new record out Oct 6)
