riddle350
So my girlfriends car took a shit earlier today. I'm really not sure what happened. I was driving along, put the brake on a little bit then went to give it some gas and the car suddenly died. I was lucky to be right next to a parking lot so I was able to get off the road. Now when you try to start it it just makes a sound like grinding mixed with reving like it's trying to start but it just won't turn over. We tried to get a jump but that didn't work and we aren't sure what to do. There wasn't any noise to indicate that something bad was happened and it was very out of the blue. Is it possible for the alternator to just break like that? If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.
benchwarmer
just from reading that it sounds like that alternator, but it's weird it just happened like that. then again, I know nothing about cars, it's the one thing I wish I knew a lot more about. jhulud
It is possible. From what you're describing, it sounds like it's the alternator that's shot. It's happened to me twice on two different cars. Sometimes when something is about to go, it just does...no matter when or where...it just goes. riddle350
thanks for the help guys. any idea how much something like that would cost?
jhulud
This was a few years ago, but mine was in the $600 range after everything was said and done. What makes it pricey is that it's a real bitch to get to replace as it sits behind the engine on most cars. I will assume that it shouldn't be that much nowadays...but I could be wrong. benchwarmer
yea, I'm pretty sure they can be pricey. mostly what I've seen is that parts aren't all that much but getting them installed is what will kill you (the labor). So, if you know someone that can do it, have them, and just buy the part.
sgoodcore
it could also be the fuel pump. my truck's full pump died and it acted just like an alternator/battery issue.
kyle
My best guess is the alternator as well. However, it could also be a lot worse. I had a truck die on me once in the middle of the road. I was just driving along and suddenly it just shut itself down. Turns out it was the automatic transmission that went out and somehow that shut the truck down. oakland
It very well could just be the battery. Is it turning over at all? Pray that it's the battery.
riddle350
It very well could just be the battery. Is it turning over at all? Pray that it's the battery. No it's not turning over at all. We tried jumping it but that didn't work. The battery is lest than a year old.
