Universal to sell singles on USB drives

Recommended Posts

In yet another attempt to avoid going to Apple's iTunes service, Universal has unveiled plans to sell singles on USB memory sticks. The company will be selling the singles for £4.99 ($10 US) with a handful of songs, and multimedia content that can be reached on the Internet.

This compares with digital download services which are priced at $0.99 and do not include any other material other than the specific song requested by the consumer. The company defended the unusual plan saying:

This is aimed at the younger 12 to 24 year olds, who no longer believe that the CD is as cool as it used to be.

You can find some more details here.

On major flaw here being if you're okay with buying digital why pay $10 for a USB drive when you can get 10 songs (or more songs in some cases) for $10?

alexisonfire did this with their last album... offered a special edition with a usb drive with videos, internet content and a few mp3's etc... dallas green did the same with his live album and they did super well here in canada. not sure if it was the same release in the us but people had no problem... they were priced at 27.99 and the regular cd was 17.99 or so.

If it had a bunch of extra stuff it would make more sense but not for just a few songs.

Record companies are overlooking the fact that the majority of their bans suck and that's why they don't do well.
