us geography to foreigners

Recommended Posts

I'm sweet at geography.

I learned really young that no one in America knows American geography either. I was in Detroit for a hockey tournament wearing my Tonawanda Lightning stuff. Fair enough, people were like "oh, where's that?"

"It's a suburb of Buffalo."

*blank stare*

"..Buffalo, NY..."

"Oh! How often do you get to the city?"

"Um.. I mean, it's 10 seconds away...."

"I love Central Park, do you go there much?"

"Uh... Buffalo is the next biggest city in the state, and it's actually 7 hours away from NYC... have you seen a map before?"

Allow me to play Devil's advocate here...

You had to know you were egging them on a bit when you said "the city" is 10 seconds away. You know what they meant when they said "the city", the whole world refers to NYC that way. So even though Buffalo is a large city in it's own right, people know NY for NYC and that's what they're going to ask about.

I get your point, but a part of you was fucking with those people. ;D
