pjaicomo
People: I am setting out on an epic adventure this weekend. I will be leaving Chicago traveling to Knoxville. From Knoxville I will be going to Myrtle Beach. From Myrtle Beach I will be headed to New York (the City). It's going to be a two week voyage. What are the best record shops in every one of those cities? Are there any in between? My girlfriend loves to watch me buy records. Dan can attest. And David. For your troubles:
cactusbot
Take a one hour detour from Chicago - Knoxville and stop at Shake It Records in Cincinnati. One of the best stores in the country.
gmoney
Give some more deets! Going through Atlanta? If so, hit up Little Five Points (a district of Atlanta), and go to Criminal Records and Wax N Facts (within about 100 feet of each other). And eat at Vortex - if you like burgers and beer. pjaicomo
Here is my route (roughly): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Chicago,+IL&daddr=Knoxville,+TN+to:Myrtle+Beach,+SC+to:New+York,+NY+to:Chicago,+IL&hl=en&geocode=FWICfwIdGuDG-inty_TQPCwOiDEAwMAJrabgrw%3BFT63JAIdnXj_-impQs5GIhZciDHFNPXE2pLqew%3BFeQNAgId2khM-ykBIVU7lWgAiTEYltC1FbEPvA%3BFXFAbQIdK8KW-yk7CD_TpU_CiTFi_nfhBo8LyA%3BFWICfwIdGuDG-inty_TQPCwOiDEAwMAJrabgrw&mra=ls&sll=37.781265,-80.82441&sspn=9.562324,16.831055&ie=UTF8&ll=37.805444,-80.793457&spn=9.560087,16.831055&t=h&z=6 Definitely won't be going through ATL. Perhaps Cinci.
cactusbot
I think Cincinnati records stores are way better than Louisville record stores.
gmoney
For some reason I read Myrtle Beach and thought South Beach, Florida. I don't know why.

electricsnow
Generation Records and Earwax Records are two shops that I went to in NYC and found a lot of good stuff.
rtw88
Lots of great stores to hit up in Philly, I'll get back at you later if no one else chimes in.
pjaicomo
Lots of great stores to hit up in Philly, I'll get back at you later if no one else chimes in. I have NEVER been to Philly. I'd like to go. Hopefully, we can hit it on the way home (if we aren't too tired).
gmoney
Repo Records in Philadelphia is good. There was another one downtown I really liked but can't remember the name.
cactusbot
Philly record stores. I liked Beautiful World Syndicate the best. Repo was second. Long In The Tooth is meh. Tequila Sunrise was rad. Really rad aesthetic. Interesting selection. A lot of electronic stuff as well as like jazz / disco / funk.
user456
If you stop in Richmond. Vinyl Conflict 324 S. Pine St. Richmond, VA, 23220 http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vinyl-Conflict-Record-Store/101077423935?v=info It's a small little shop and they sell mostly punk/metal/hardcore. Also there's Plan 9 Music which has a massive amount of records in the basement but you have to pick through to find anything most of the time. And Deep Grove is cool too. http://www.facebook.com/deepgrooverecords
pjaicomo
This is all great stuff. I am hoping someone has some recommendations for the places I will actually be going though. I can only make so many record detours (unfortunately).
kurtz
Stop in Allentown, PA on your way home and hit up Double Decker Records. Best record store on the east coast, hands down.
vinylj26
I can tell you that Myrtle Beach doesn't have any record stores at all or atleast that I could ever find because I go there once a year on vacation. The Coastal Grand Mall has a Hot Topic that has a large vinyl selection.

Little Five Points is a trip. Saw a massive pillow fight in the park, hung out at the Vortex and watched my shitfaced friend oogle a tranny and hung out with the bouncer all night talking about black girls vs white girls. I seriously fucking love it down there to the point I would move if I had a better reason. I cant wait to go back.
papermonsters
Yo dude! I'm in Knoxville. Disc Exchange on Chapman Highway has tons of new releases. Lost and Found Records on Broadway has a ton of older stuff, with limited new releases and a pretty decent gutterpunk and hip hop section. Raven Records on Kingston Pike is pretty new and has some okay stuff, you just have to search because they don't have things sorted out well, but last time I was in there they has like 3 ALL records. Music Room Guitars on Kingston Pike is really close to Raven Records and has some alright stuff, but super limited. You can get Beatles records there pretty cheap. Mkays Used Books has records, but can be hit or miss. My friend got "Your Favorite Weapon" on clear there for 3.00 this past year, though. Also, if you're into pizza, eat at Barleys Taproom. If you go to Disc Exchange (which you should) stop at Rallys thats a block away and get some of their french fries. They'll make your peepee hard.
