kirbypuckett
http://post-gazette.com/pg/11209/1163594-100-0.stm The Batman has spoken -- and he predicts a hot time in Pittsburgh for the next couple of weeks. Literally, at least for him. A bemused, casually dressed Christian Bale joked today that when "The Dark Knight Rises" blankets some Downtown streets with fake snow, he won't get any relief. "Well, I hope that all of you guys are going to feel cooler 'cause of the fake snow, I certainly won't be -- stuck in that rubber suit all the time," he told a press conference at the Renaissance Hotel, Downtown. The third and final picture in director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy brought a relaxed, bearded Bale -- clad in black cargo pants, with folded sunglasses tucked into his T-shirt and hooded jacket -- in front of the press a day before filming starts in Pittsburgh. "I've never been to Pittsburgh before," he told a room packed with writers, photographers and select guests of the Pittsburgh Film Office. "There will be fighting on the streets a great deal," he predicted, although not a whit of detail about the story was leaked. "Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit and hospitality ahead of time, and we'll try and stay out of your hair as much as possible and hopefully leave with good memories for everybody." Mr. Nolan, director, co-writer and producer of the conclusion of the trilogy, confirmed shooting starts on Friday and apologized in advance for any inconveniences caused by road and building closures. "I just want to take this opportunity before we start shooting -- we start tomorrow -- to thank really everybody in the city of Pittsburgh for the welcome that we've been shown. "When you're making a large-scale action film that has to showcase, really, the vitality and the size of a major American city -- but also involves a certain amount of disruption to that city in order to make the action appear credible that we want to put on screen," Nolan said he really needs the sort of welcome and cooperation he's found here. "I think the architecture of this city is a very beautiful city on a very impressive scale and yet one which has a community that hasn't lost its human scale. Those are two elements that are extremely hard to find and incredibly valuable to a production like 'The Dark Knight Rises,' where we're really looking to have the architecture of a major American city somewhat disrupted by what we're going to do." Mr. Bale and Mr. Nolan were part of a welcome to Pittsburgh press conference that also included producers Emma Thomas and Kevin De La Noy; Dawn Keezer, director of the film office; Gov. Tom Corbett; County Executive Dan Onorato; and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. The trailer for the movie features the lines, "Every hero has a journey ... Every journey has an end" and shows an ailing Commissioner Gordon, played by Gary Oldman, insisting the Batman must come back. Someone sitting at his hospital bedside, who sounds like Bruce Wayne, asks, "What if he doesn't exist anymore?" Also returning are Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. Newcomers include Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. If Ms. Hathaway's scenes require a trip to Pittsburgh, it will mark a return for the actress who made "Love & Other Drugs" here opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Mr. Hardy's star has been on the rise since he came to Pittsburgh for "Warrior," scheduled for a Sept. 9 release. Principal photography started in mid-May and Pittsburgh is just one of the locations for the film also shooting in Scotland, England, India and various cities in the states including Los Angeles. Nolan has said he will use IMAX cameras more than he did on "The Dark Knight," which allowed moviegoers to sink into its wide-screen dark depths. He and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, wrote the screenplay for the movie scheduled for release July 20, 2012.

Bigelow Blvd. to close in Oakland for Batman Thursday, July 28, 2011 By Jon Schmitz, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Bigelow Boulevard will close between Fifth and Forbes avenues in Oakland tonight so it can be used as a base camp for vehicles used in the filming of the Batman movie. kirbypuckett
Ok, so they're filming a couple of streets from my place today. I walked over this morning to take a look, but they've got it pretty well blocked off. All I could see was a bunch of fake snow.
