kannibal
Yeah, budget? If this is main concern, we need to know.
blanchardoswald
I guess to start, I just bought the M-Audio AV40s. They're relatively low priced (100-200 range) but they sound great. Until I'm out of university these'll do me just fine. I've read many reviews and these were constantly recommended.

slinch
M-Audio AV40s. These will do you well, and since in the other thread you mentioned you're only looking for a table/preamp/speakers setup, these have you covered.
cymbalism15
How do M-Audio AV40s compare to something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882325015&Tpk=Defintive%20Technology%20BP8Bs Also, the M-Audio are monitors, does this make a difference? slinch
I have zero experience with Definitive Technology equipment, but I can tell you that I have never heard a floorstanding speaker outperform a bookshelf speaker at the same price point. But in this case it's hard to make any kind of judgment, because M-Audio are active so the price comparison wouldn't really be fair, plus the BP8 are in a much higher price class. I'd say two very different items for very different needs.

slinch
Just simple economics. Less material and less components for the same price generally means more quality. If you have a $300 bookshelf speaker with 2 drivers and a $300 floorstander with 5 drivers, it's easy to determine which one incorporates more compromises in regards of components quality. Also, a 2-way design allows for a simpler crossover, again a big factor in the end result. Bookshelves have their drawbacks as well, obviously most notable in the lower end. You can forget about flooding big rooms with sound. But speaking strictly in terms of sound quality, it's all pretty straightforward. slinch
Or a few $ less on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS21-LR-Watt-2-Way-Speakers/dp/B004MEWZE4 But to the OP, note that you'll also need and amp with speakers like these.
