Newb - What's the best setup with $150,000 budget?

Recommended Posts

Found a local hifi shop who took me to their "secret" room.

Focal Stella Utopia EM: $95,000

2x VAC Statement 450 iQ: $120,000

VAC Statement Preamp: $50,000

Clearaudio Master Innovation turntable: $30,000

Clearaudio Goldfinger cartridge: $15,000

Second arm and cartridge: I forgot.

So about $350,000 considering cables, stands, and everything else. Safe assumption.

I don't know why, but I find this funny considering you'd be playing a $20 LP on it

I've heard lots of very expensive stuff at shows but it never seems to sound at it's best to me, it's all a bit rushed and you are being bamboozled with facts and figures so it never really sticks in my memory, the sort of room that ajxd visited above is always the best place to listen to very expensive kit as it has time to settle and you have time to properly appreciate just how good it is.

A few years ago a friend used to have a Hifi shop where he dealt mostly in mid to high end kit and would always get me in for a 2nd opinion listen of the really expensive stuff, the most expensive I think contained a Boulder power amp that didn't really impress, we tried it on various speakers including Apogee's and high end Focal's but we both just expected more for the money. I can't remember the model but it was a behemoth of a thing with the case machined out of a solid block of aluminium and it weighed a ton.

He also got a lot of the higher end Clearaudio turntables and cartridges in and Kuzma turntables and all of those impressed no matter how expensive, so much so that I treated myself to a Kuzma Stogi arm at the time and have always regretted selling it.

I always wondered with ultra high-end gear, how many units can the company sell in a year? Like, I genuinely have NO idea, but I can't imagine a company selling more than maybe a few dozen 15,000 dollar cartridges a year.

I asked about this. They are one of the few dealers of that line of Focal in the SE. They said they have people fly in to demo their gear. I can't imagine many people would drop $95,000 on a pair of speakers they've never heard. As one of the "very high end" dealers in ATL... they've done installations in a lot of sport player's homes. Not so much turntables, lots of home theatre.
