  2. This is a really neat release from a guy who probably has a bunch of good records up his sleeve. Really looking forward to giving the full thing listen and seeing what else he puts out in the years ahead. From a short piece in RollingStone: "Originally we had Ringo set to play drums on it, but there was some kind of mix-up about dates and we were under the gun, so Jeremy Stacey stayed on the kit," Tench tells Rolling Stone. "The next day Ringo rang up and said, ‘Let's cut it!’ And we had a perfectly good take, but it was missing a certain something. I asked him to come put some jangle on it, he turned up 20 minutes later with a canvas bag full of tambourines, played it twice, and suddenly it all came into focus. He's really something, that Ringo!" - Benmont Tench
  3. That's what brought me to this thread - to find out what was up with their 30% off claim. I'm still tempted to buy from them but that's somewhat vexing...
  4. Thanks - much appreciated. I'm definitely going to be looking for feedback from this community as we go forward with it. I really value those that speak their mind and care enough to help people improve what they are working on. Oh god, I can only imagine! A bit of a tangent: I actually remember reading the Feedbands thread here a while back when I first saw their banner ads and was googling them trying to figure out who started the company. To this day their website carefully avoids identifying who is behind it which is typically a red flag for me (especially when a Google search doesn't even answer the question). We just have a splash page for LimitedWax currently but the actual site is being put together now and will be very clear about who we are and why were are starting it.
  5. Thanks - I appreciate that. I've seen lots of people get really thorny over criticism but honestly it's what I search for - much more actionable than blind praise! I agree, the real test is actually getting through the process a couple times with happy artists, manufacturers and fans. Sorry to disappoint!
  6. Thanks so much - fair points! Know this is still a very fresh idea. We are testing the waters, learning as we go, and this discussion is incredibly helpful. I wanted to put a face to LimitedWax and join the conversation. This is very much an idea driven by passion. With the emergence of streaming as the main form of music consumption for the average person, so much has been lost for the sake of convenience. I think the vinyl format is worth more (not simply dollar-wise, but emotionally) to passionate music fans than ever before. Our goal is to make it so more artists are able to deliver music to their fans in the format that contains the most heart - vinyl. How would you guys suggest we describe what we are working on in a way that doesn't sound like we are just trying to cash in? I want to make sure we are accurately representing what we are aiming for with LimitedWax. The fact that it sounded similar to Feedbands at first-glance is concerning! Thanks again!
  7. I created a site that helps bands press their records with little or no money down. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it!

  8. Hi guys, my name is Julian and I'm one of the co-founders of LimitedWax. Thanks for talking about it here! I wanted to let you know I'm here to learn from you because I want to build something you'd see the value in. Currently what you see is a landing page allowing people to put in an email address so we can get more info about what they are looking for and tell them what we are working on. If something doesn't sound right about it, it's likely due to the fact you you've only gotten to read two sentences about it. I don't deny that creating records is an arduous process. It's... Expensive There are a bevy of options (weights, colors, jackets, etc) The music needs mastering specifically for vinyl (this is the bit we won't be doing other than referring mastering engineers if requested) Shipping out hundreds of records is time-consuming. But I know I'm not saying anything you guys don't know! And that's precisely why we want to help out. We'll be giving independent artists (and very small labels) the ability to set up a way to collect preorders that will cover some or all of their costs. Unlike Kickstarter or indiegogo we won't have a dollar goal, we will have a unit goal. We won't have numerous reward levels - you will preorder the record or you won't. We'll work with the artist to find them the best manufacturer based on their needs. Once the records are pressed we'll handle all of the shipping to fans. That's disappointing and if you all feel that way I'll need to change something in how we describe what we are working on... We came up with the idea of LimitedWax specifically because we didn't like the idea of subscribing to some random startup that has no label affiliation and then just trusting them (or the other subscribers) to give you something you'll enjoy for $20-25 a month. My record collection is a piece of who I am and a direct reflection of my taste (for better or worse ). I don't want to add just anything to my collection and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way. The goal of LimitedWax is to make it so artists can press limited editions of their CD/digital releases for their current fans that really want it. I suppose it could also be used to reissue older recordings if the artist had all of the rights to the masters. As for HeffersonGowell's concerns with regard to tech companies, as soon as a tech company takes VC investment the timer has started and now they need to work towards being acquired or an IPO. I think either is a preposterous goal for a company that helps artists put out vinyl. Sure, there has been growth in sales, but new vinyl sales still account for less than 1% of all music sales. If we were looking to start a company valued in the hundreds of millions you can trust me when I say we wouldn't have chosen this! Also, execution isn't a landing page - execution is in enabling an artist to collect pre-orders to cover (or subsidize) production and then have us get the records shipped out to their fans. We haven't started yet so I'd greatly appreciate you withholding your judgement until we actually get to the point where we attempt that. Again, I'm really happy that this was posted here and I signed up for the forum to continue the conversation. Please post questions or suggestions here or feel free to send an email to limitedwax at gmail.com. I really appreciate all of your feedback on the idea - very helpful! Thanks again, Julian tl;dr - we're not Feedbands, we love vinyl, and we're just trying to start a fun business that helps artists (not looking to be a Silicon Valley/SF startup)
