Those numerous examples are too specific sorry.
And I was implying you don't post at all to avoid this huge toll it takes on you. The fact that you think its relatable to a murder victim is proof enough.

I guess I'm too jaded by the internet, because from its genesis I believe that anonymity and toxicity are unfortunately synonymous. And I just don't see it changing. VC, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, Twitter... 90% of these folks are tough guys who roll up their sleeves in a Comment section, but would be caught mumbling and gazing downward while anxiously caressing their bald spot or beer gut, in the heat of an "IRL debate". (Or, equally likely, hiding behind mom & dad since they're not legally old enough to create a social media account in the first place.) I get where your head is at – I really do – but it's such a lofty ambition. "Be a part of the change you want to see" is a beautiful concept on paper but it's just not happening on any message board, ever. Especially on VC.
I'm with you in that I backspace 90% of the shit I initially draft up and consider posting. You can call it elitism or gatekeeping or whatever else you'd like, but these kind of discussions – hazing 😱 – are just a staple of the board, for better or worse. It ain't that deep. And just to set the record straight, holyvacants is stubborn as shit. As am I. We've gotten in arguments and taken jabs at one another over the years, but we've also worked out sales and hooked one another up. I'm not trying to vouch for him or rush to his aid, but you're pushing one another's buttons over him calling a struggle stupid. A lot of his responses on the board are concise, negative, and posted in attempts to get a laugh or push some buttons. He didn't even call you stupid. He didn't write "How is this a struggle? Are you some kind of dumb shit? Go with the one you like best." I think it was pretty tame in comparison to a lot of what he writes, but that's just my take.
Like I said, I get what you're saying with your post. I really do. But this board and its tendencies aren't going to be changing anytime soon. There's always going to be snide jabs and jokes made at the cost of others. Some are going to push users into snapping back, egos will be bruised, and petty squabbling will carry out for a lot longer than it needs to be. Such is the ebb and flow of VC. If you were hoping for someone to read your post about the internal struggles you were facing, and respond with "ikr, you said exactly what I was thinking! Take my upvote! I'll probably just buy both because I'm hopeless 😂😂😂"... then I think you're spending your time and energy on the wrong community. That's not a shot at you. Just a genuine suggestion, because I know I'd be exhausted if I felt like I always had to be on edge or ready to argue anytime I wanted to voice my thoughts in a community.
Cool.

For clarity’s sake, you weren’t getting ribbed because you’re drawn to a rarer variant, or because you’re interested in this release. Your “struggle” – and not you specifically – found itself ridiculed because it really is pretty fucking silly. I wouldn’t take it so personally since you’re hardly the first person to get blasted on VC for it, but that internal debate is a meme because it implies that your variant choice is more of an investment than something you’ll personally enjoy. Muh rarity, etc. It’s not limited to this release, nor exclusive to your own mindset, but it’s definitely an eye-roll when users are actively sweating which variant may be worth an extra $10 on Discogs down the road. It’s why labels will make the safest and least appealing variant the rarest, and the most enticing ones common. They’re banking off variant collectors and conflicted hype beasts who need to own the rarest color-way. 9 times out of 10 that’s for the potential resale value, or just a weird feeling of satisfaction / superiority that comes with having the most elusive edition reside on your shelf.

That used to be me; my hands aren’t clean from that. I used to spring for whatever the most limited edition happened to be, and would sometimes supplement that with a variant that felt like the best fit. But I’ve been buying vinyl long enough that I’ve seen – far too often – that it doesn’t really matter, or that the inverse is true. I’ve scored some incredible deals on the rarest variant of a release I slept on, years later, after hype has died down. Sometimes cheaper than what any other standard copies are being sold for.

Advertisement: 0:06At the end of the day, if the record is being purchased for my own enjoyment, and I’m going to be the one who looks at it and spins it on my turntable, I’m going to spring for whatever I like best. Whether that’s the /200 1st press or the /2,000 3rd press. But I also buy with deliberation and hold on tight to 99% of what I buy, these days. Settling for something less desirable (but rarer) seems really goofy to me, so of course that’s going to get some 2¢ online. Especially with the veil of anonymity. Welcome to VC.

do you know what thats limited to?
I don't. I do know it's a pressing from 2017 and that it had been available prior to the announcement of this new album. My guess is it's the remaining stock from a repress that never sold out, but the announcement of this new album has a lot of people (like myself) picking it up while pre-ordering the new one. -
Their first album is selling fast too. There were 81 copies of that when I checked a couple hours ago and it's now down to 6.

FOB webstore also has from under the cork tree on a split variant. is this a new press too or old? it's SUPER EXPENSIVE/OVERPRICED. Fuck.
That's from 2018. I've been seeing ads for The Sound of Vinyl pushing this variant on me a lot recently, but it looks like they're sold out of it. A cursory google suggests that variant is sold out in most places now.

Damn that set was $120 shipped? Why? At least that makes me feel better that I never got through the waiting room before they shut things down.
edit: looks like this is live and works. Ashtray and lighter also under the "House" section.

Haha, I don't know why I didn't realize everything was going to be absurdly expensive but I'm suddenly cured of my desire for any part of this collection. -

Yeah I mean I'm in the same boat. I question getting out all the time, and even did a few years back. Listed all my records for sale, all the rare stuff went fast, but it took so much effort that I stopped ha. Also, I'm filling up wayyyy too many Kallax cubes. I have like 12 full cubes.
That's the thing, when I entertain the notion of selling off some of my collection, just the thought of all that packaging and all those trips to the post office puts me off of the idea. I did recently compare with a friend the amount I've spent on records in 10 years versus the amount he's spent on cigarettes, and they were about equal, so that made me feel a little better about it haha. Worse ways to spend your money. -

The McDonalds release was fun because it was $5 and included a chicken sandwich hoodie. I had the houseplant release in my cart and it was $120 shipped. Passaroo.
Oh wow, yeah, no thanks. I'll pass on that too.
2 minutes ago, MCDELTAT said:I'm not slighting or making fun of anyone who does care, but given that there isn't much of a description or tracklisting, it's just a meh to me. The McDonalds record at least told us it was a jingle.
Totally valid, and I do agree with you about the frivolity of this particular release (especially now that I know it was $120), but I think your initial response tapped into something I think about a lot in regards to this hobby. I'm looking at a bookcase right now with 500+ records I've purchased over a roughly 10 year period since I started collecting. I've spent at least 15k on vinyl in that time, easy. That's a down payment on a house for music I can very easily listen to on Spotify for $10/month. But I'm a collector at heart and a lot of the records I have are from smaller artists that I am happy to support.
But I also have records that I barely ever listen to that I know sell for anywhere between 100-300 dollars and I think, "Why don't I just sell these?" I've never flipped for profit like that, and I have a sentimental attachment to my collection, but the more it grows the more I find myself asking, "What am I really doing?"
Also the Houseplant thing just ended and I am bummed because I really just wanted to buy an ashtray from Seth Rogen. -
1 minute ago, MCDELTAT said:
I don't get why I'm supposed to care about this. People make playlists all the time. Seth rogen could have put it on Spotify, but instead it's on vinyl so I'm supposed to care? Are there tracks not available elsewhere? New Songs? etc?
Truthfully I'm more interested in the ashtrays and the lighter, but I dunno man, it's just a fun thing? I felt the same way about that McDonald's record a few weeks ago but I kept it to myself and let people have their fun. I feel like there are far more egregious examples of random unnecessary records than this. You could apply "why should I care about this" to the vast majority of collectibles.

Curious if this was on anybody else's radar. It went on pre-sale at 11am CT today but I've been stuck in a queue for two hours. IG stories say the amount of traffic crashed the site. Was anybody able to get in?
Sorry, I don't know how to insert images or embed IG posts.
