  1. I used to listen to them a lot. Great for driving.

But I pretty much stopped listening because the shows are often repetitive IMO. Rogan is kinda annoying at times too. But he gets some really cool people on the show sometimes, and those are the episodes really worth listening to IMO.

  2. Unless a particular pressing it's notoriously bad-sounding, I'll buy whatever's cheapest. I'm not that much of an audiophile that I need to have the very best-sounding pressing I can possibly find. Really, I love represses when it means I can get an album for $20 rather than $60+++

Even if an original pressing is widely considering better-sounding than a repress, if the price gap is there I'll still opt for a slightly 'inferior' repressing and probably never notice/care.

  3. Anyone else stumbled on any other good releases from this year? Patiently awaiting the AWVFTS full length.

I'm kinda into OPN's Commissions 1, but I find it a challenging listen at times. At least the last track, hah.

They're pretty well-known releases I suppose (though not mentioned in this thread yet), but I've been really digging the Sunn/Ulver collab and Bohren's latest album. Especially Bohren's latest album, actually. I've been playing the hell out of it both on my stereo and in the car (vinyl comes with a CD copy).

Ulver also released another "collab" in late 2013 with a Norwegian orchestra, if you missed it. Another one on heavy rotation for me.

  4. How does that work, with record shops? Cause it's the opposite for me. My record shop's prices for albums are almost always identical to what I'd pay going online, sometimes the shop is cheaper. Do they just have to essentially say, "Hey, I'm a record shop," and get better prices? I know there's some site or search they use and I guess order through, because two of the workers were complaining about it one day when I asked if they could order a certain record.

  5. My record shop is about 35 minutes away and doesn't always have what I want in-stock... but I still order albums through them when I can. It's a slight hassle, but it costs about the same as me ordering online and I'm very happy to support a local shop because all the people there are really great.

There's another record shop about 15 minutes from me that's my coworker said is really nice (I used to live by the one that's farther away which is why I still go there). Plus there's a stereo shop that sells refurbished gear and some vintage records nearby, and I believe there's another record shop about 30-40 minutes the opposite direction. And I live in the middle of bum-fuck-nowhere.

But that said, even some records I order through the shop sometimes come 'damaged.' It's not their fault. It almost entirely depends on how the record is packed. If the records are stored inside the sleeve--especially if its not shrink-wrapped and/or tightly packaged--it'll likely have some creases or tears around the seams. It sucks, but... I get over it. And often times, new records do have a bit of 'dirt' on them. That's normal. Just wipe 'em down.

  6.

See, I'm not going to be worried about the dude's emotional well being anytime soon. You know why? He actually wins in the end. Dude is in a successful band in spite of his shortcomings. Wouldn't we all love to be successful at things we're not good at?

I kinda figured your excessive rantings towards the guy were fueled by jealousy. ;)

All insults and personal tastes aside, there is not a single band or form of music that benefits from a poor musician.

I suppose I don't even have to go any further with this post then, because I disagree here. If Pelican's drummer is a 'poor musician,' I'd say they benefit because of it. I don't know if I would like Pelican if they had, say, Dave Turncrantz (Russian Circles) behind the kit. He's an incredible drummer, but I just like how Pelican's drummer sounds with the music.

For similar reasons, I also enjoy the incredibly mechanical and inhuman programmed drumming on Godflesh and early Jesu. That deep pocket groove that you find in Melvins is perfect for them, and it is great for most other bands as well. So I will say Pelican's drummer (I should just look up his name, but I'm being lazy) is lucky, because I don't think there are many other bands he would sound good in. But I don't think you need to be technically proficient to be a good musician, and I think despite his shortcomings, Pelican's drummer is still a good musician simply because [to my ears] his drumming fits the music.

  7. See, the only thing you need to know about Pelican is that their drummer sucks. That's basically what they're known for at this point. I'm not a good drummer by any stretch of the imagination but fucking hell is that guy a pile of shit.

C'mon, man. Disliking an artist doesn't mean you need to degrade them. I'm sure you probably don't even care about me being annoyed by your comment, but it's sort of a pet-peeve of mine to see/hear people calling musicians (or any artists for that matter) a 'pile of shit' because of their technical skill. If it's not your cup of tea, stop drinking it.

Pelican could have easily went in and 'cleaned up' all the drumming after recording like nearly every other band does, but they didn't. Instead, it's raw, stiff, and sloppy. And I love it all the more because of that as I think it fits the music, especially their earlier, more sludgy and heavy stuff. No doubt you disagree with me, and that's perfectly fine--music is a very personal experience. But let's just leave it at that and forgo the insults.

  8. Interesting pick.  I actually think Australasia is among their weaker releases; I probably wouldn't be a fan of the band if that was my first stepping stone.

Australasia is easily my favorite. And Drought is my favorite song they've written. Most of their other albums kinda bore me tbh.

Also, I'm a drummer but I kinda like their drummer. At least on the albums (I've never seen them live, and it's been a while since I watched the DVD I have). He's definitely the weakest link, but I actually think his somewhat sloppy and 'stiff' playing adds a bit of character to the music, which I like.

  9. I figure this may be a good place to ask this. I'm considering picking up a guitar. I'll likely play a decent variety in learning to play, but I'm most excited about playing slow, doomy metal stuff. I'm just wondering what might be a good set up for a casual apartment hobbyist, or maybe a general idea for a budget.

I did look at the Bugera V22 which looked nice, but it's a tad pricier than I'd probably like. Don't really know where to start as far as guitars...

  10. These here are the best ones I've ever used and pretty much the only ones I buy anymore.  Makes every album look like a million bucks.  5 mil.

These are what I use. They're firm and clear, so everything is easy to see and take in/out.

I've never thought to buy inner sleeves, but I guess they'd actually be a good idea as well, especially for records that have thicker full inner sleeves that actually make the record harder to get out.

  11. Dammit. I think I'm just going to walk away. After putting some stuff in my cart, I decided I don't want to spend the money. There isn't anything I REALLY want, asides from maybe the Isis and St Germain. But w/e, here's the stuff that caught my eye:

    $6 Isis - Red Sea

    $15 St Germain - Tourist

$11 High on Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis (also Art of Self Defense and Blessed Black Wings)

    $15 Skeletonwitch - Serpents Unleashed

    $15 Palms - S/T

$13 Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal

$11 Graves of Valor - Salarian Gate

    $11 Coldcut - Sound Mirrors

    $12 Kylesa - Spiral Shadow

  12. There is a record shop maybe an hour away that I usually try to buy from. They don't always have what I want in stock, but they do always order stuff for me if it's available. I could order the stuff myself for about the same price and without the inconvenient hour's drive, but it's a great shop and I like supporting them if I can.

I generally just order online for sales, out-of-print albums, or for some pre-orders. I've never bought records from any other chain stores.

  13. I only bought Shadowrun and the one expansion for Skyrim that lets you build your own house. Though, I'm not sure what I need to do to start it... the parts show up that I can craft, but I think I need to wait for a letter from a courier or something?

But yea, I'm glad that's all I spent. I've got plenty of games to keep my busy as-is, so I can wait for better sales on some games I want.

  14. I finally started reading Game of Thrones, and I'm about halfway through the first book. Good stuff. My only real gripe is that I'm horrible with names, and there are tons of names in this book. But I have it on kindle which makes it somewhat easier because of the x-ray feature.

Does the TV show match up with the books? As in, can I watch the first season after I finish the first book and not get any spoilers?

  15. I feel like this should get the infomercial treatment: Start with a black and white clip of some guy clumsily turning knobs and the tangling cables on a larger amplifier, then cut to full HD as the same guy coolly adjusts the volume on a Sprout amplifier while smiling awkwardly and nodding in approval.

Not trying to say anything bad about the amplifier, just their advertising tactic.
