  1. I was just making a point. This isn't the first time this has happened. Every time this subject comes up there are at least two people who start up with the "how do I get to be COTM" posts. That's not to mention the emails and personal messages I've gotten from people asking me what they can do and if I can help them get to be COTM. Like I have anything to do with it or whatever. I just think that's tacky, and you obviously don't. Good for you. You're better than me.

Fair enough, if people have actually sent you messages asking how to be the VC collector of the month, then yes, that is pretty tacky. Also, to my knowledge, I haven't read the other threads that you're mentioning. However, since your post was in this thread, I had to base my response on what was said in this thread and how you responded. So while I feel that begging to be the COTM is tacky, I simply saw no examples of anyone doing that in this thread and had no idea what the basis of your post was.

That makes more sense now. No argument here.

  2. It's pretty tacky and silly to be begging to be the next collector of the month. I'd say the people that have so far been selected aren't taking it very seriously. Not that I wasn't flattered to be asked, it was great. But Virgil's got to have a pretty good reason to recognize you in a crowd if you're going to be picked. Both Scott and I are reasonably well-known people within the indie / punk / whatever scene because we've been heavily involved in it for a long time in some way. The others have been people that have had good dealings with Virgil (from what he has said before on this matter). I'm assuming most of those clamoring to be COTM are young. My advice is to just relax and your time will come.

Wow. Seriously dude, I'm pretty sure most of those people were joking. Sure, they'd like to be the collector of the month, but they're not seriously on their knees begging Virgil for the privilege. They're talking about the relationship with being COTM with having a beard for christsake. How is any of that meant to be taken literally and to be scolded for?

  3. Sorry for the headache, but thats great that it worked out for you in the end. Great story!

Anyways, I don't get people who run distro shops for things like records. I mean, if you're gonna rip people off, why not just "sell" computers, cameras, and other high ticket items? Why be an asshat over a few bucks? In the long run, you'll make much more money by being honest, reliable, and legit than you do being shady. It just makes no sense.

  4. This is my boxer Maggie. My friend found her a couple months ago (almost ran her over). She didn't have a collar so he took her home. After a couple days he realized he couldn't keep her so I took her with me (she was just so playful, friendly, and fun). I took her to the vet to have her checked for one of those ID chips, but there wasn't one. I also left her info at the vet, animal shelter, and put up signs near where she was found. Nobody ever called to claim her. I think someone had abandoned her, but now she has a great home with lots of yard space to play in and two other dogs to play with.

  5. Another FYI for anyone who didn't get that 7" that was shipped with Los Feliz pre-orders... it didn't sell out during pre-order. Chuck wound up with a couple hundred and has been selling them at his shows. There's always the chance that they're sold out now, but last time I saw him (about a month ago) he had quite a few left. So if anyone needs that one make sure to pick one up if he comes through, or try to find someone living in a city he'll be playing at and buy it there.

Also, regarding the Austin Lucas/Chuck split... Chuck said he's been thinking about having Virgil press it or possibly even press it himself to sell to people in North America and leave the import for the Europeans. From what I remember, he has to spend too much to get copies to sell and has to charge a higher rate than he would like for a 7". I'm not sure if thats still in the works, but thats what he told me in May.

  6. What exactly do you mean when you say "full discography"? I have every Hot Water Music and Chuck Ragan record pressed on vinyl, however, I do not have ever color variation (I'm assuming this is actually what is meant). I was attempting to get every color variation, but stopped about 5 months ago. I had over 100 HWM records, but it started getting really, really expensive and then No Idea started repressing some of the older records and were throwing in some really weird variations that would have been impossible to find (I think No Idea has already repressed No Division on around 10 variations, some of which are limited to less than 10). At that point I gave up, but mainly because I needed some cash. I sold off some of the valuable pieces in my collection, and kept some of my favorites.

I've pretty much told myself that I won't start collecting a band's full discography and all color and pressing variations unless I started doing it at the beginning of the band's carreer, when I can buy the records as they come out while they're still cheap.

  7. I've been staring at my CD's lately, wondering why I ever paid so much for such worthless shit. Anyways, I'm thinking of ebaying the ones I have the jewel cases/liner notes for. I know I won't get more than a buck or two for each CD, but if I am able to unload a couple hundred thats a decent chunk of change. Anyways, has anyone tried ebaying their CDs? If so, did you find it worth it or is it best to just take them down to the local record store?

  8. I'm into photography. For a while I was also into camera collecting and had something like 15 different cameras at one point. I've probably owned 40+ cameras over the last few years, the vast majority of which are vintage. They've ranged in value anywhere from $10-$2000. I used to shoot strictly with Leicas, but I've sold my last Leica and now my one and only serious camera is a medium format Rolleiflex.

  9. HOORAY!!! My order finally came in today!

My New Wave LP came with the bonus CD. Now the question is, should I keep the other CD I had originally ordered with the DVD, or send it back?

Is there anything on the DVD that's worth keeping it?

Well, I was actually at the show they taped for the DVD and it was a great performance. If you don't think you'll watch it, just send it back. To be honest, why did you order the CD to begin with? It wouldn't have been hard to have just downloaded the mp3's of the album and paid for the vinyl. I think the DVD would be worth having, though.

Also, my Los Feliz is not on gray (swirl??), it's more of a purple. I like it.

The purple looks a lot cooler, but oddly enough its less rare than the grey.

  10. it was expensive, but in my opinion totally worth it. the non-LE version is black and costs $350. mine was $400 b/c of the limited color(i forget how many were made, not many, maybe 1000 total), and then it was $50 more for the upgraded cartridge. so, while $450 dollars seems extreme, especially with lots of more budget options available, i have never once regretted my decision. at one point i hooked up my old table just to compare, and it was like night and day. i can't believe i ever listened to records like that. if you're just starting out with vinyl and don't have very many, i would say definately get a cheaper one to start out with. but at this point 95% of the time at home i only listen to records. so it was totally worth it for me to get the best piece of equipment i could afford.

and i'm not sure, but the "Ferrari Red" paintjob might make the records sound better. ;)

What sort of equipment do you have the table hooked up to?
