flicker
Nas is bad. I still don't get him and never have. Just get Illmatic and stop there. The reissue sounds crisp and brilliant, but everything else Nas has done gets a big 'meh.' His latest, Hip Hop is Dead has some moments. Illmatic is hip-hop's Thriller. Everyone had that record back in the day. and its because its so good.
cadetapplesauce
find mc chris - knowing is half the hassle. snobots' mc remixes are good, too. some of you might think mc chris is a joke, but i like him. his voice is high, yeah, and he raps about geeky things, but unless you're digging it from the start, his edge gets dull on you. then you probably hate him. atmosphere is pretty good. his later stuff is eh, but strictly leakage was pretty good, and so was the song "sunshine". and that's about it. i like kanye west a lot, but he's definitely more pop than strict hip hop. his flows are staggering sometimes, which can really detract, but it's catchy. gang starr, the roots, tribe called quest... classic snoop and dre. all that's good shit. martyk36
A Tribe Called Quest-Midnight Marauders is phenomenal, my favorite tribe album. the low end theory is also stellar, I just like MM a little more. Also, I feel that every fan of underground hip hop should own a copy of Aesop Rock's Labor Days. that album is absolutely incredible. zak138
It's a crime that Kool Keith was mentioned only once and in passing. He has put out a record touching on just about any style you could possibly be into. Space Rap? Check. Horror Rap? Check. Booty Bass? Check. Songs by a half shark/alligator half man? Check. If you're interested, he's released records under Kool Keith, Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis, Diesel Truckers, and more. Definately start with Dr. Octagonecologyst if you're interested. skumbucket
Sweatshop Union: http://www.myspace.com/sweatshopunion7 Listen to Come Back no fucking way -- i didn't think sweatshop made it anywhere in the states. they are awesome. and awesome dudes. kyprios' solo album wasn't that killer, but the group dynamic is amazing. skumbucket
oh, and certain kool keith records (and his subsidiary identities) are amazing. the roots have done some really great stuff. if you're smart/able to listen to slightly jokey songs, mc frontalot has a really entertaining record and a kind of entertaining one. the first one was better. kirbypuckett
Yah Mos Def ...if you're into the Beastie Boys. The group is called YMD, because Mos sued them or something, but check 'em out. They have a song titled "Jive Like Jehu" and that cracks me up.

letskissthesky
people have recommended most of the hip hop i can think of like: black star ghostface gza talib kweli jedi mind tricks mos def common but i haven't seen anyone mention....and after looking for their myspace i just realized they're right from here. insane. but they're really fucking good. masters of the universe is one of my favorite hip hop albums. binary star: http://www.myspace.com/4003715 also somewhat hip hop. kinda indie rock hip hop hybrid. real good stuff. lyrics are kinda wacky. why?: http://www.myspace.com/whyanticon

cosmonaut
Also, my general rules for weeding out crap hip hop are as follows: 1. Disregard anyone with "Lil'" or "Young" as their first name. You've now avoided Lil Wayne, Lil Jon (and the East Side Boyz), Young Jeezy, Young Joc, and Young Buck. 2. Be skeptical of hip hop from below the Mason-Dixon line. There are good artists from the south, like Little Brother and older Outkast, but the majority is bitches-and-hos crunk bullshit.
youarethere
Oh, and the self titled Black Star album is a classic that I like going back to. F.A.C.T. It's mind blowing, everyone should hear it. You are seriously missing out if you haven't heard this album.
