Got a few questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I'm just getting into vinyl, and have a few questions.

1. Right now, i only have 1 LP (Rush - Moving Pictures). The record seems a bit dusty, but not very bad overall. Will it damage my new stylus when I play it? (AT95e, using the included stylus)

2. If the answer to #1 is yes, and I wanted to but some new records to play, would the needle actually damage the new LP?

3. When playing, i hear a lot of pops and snaps. Is this just the nature of vinyl, or is it caused by a dirty or old record?

4. Compared to digital, my turntable sounds like it's spinning just a tad slow. Is there a way I can adjust it? It's an Akai AP-D2. BTW before I started using it, it had been sitting in my grandmother's closet for about 10 years.

For reference, here is my equiptment:

-Akai AP-D2 Turntable

-Audio Technica AT95e with included stylus

-Sony STR-AV770x Stereo

-Bose Acoustimass 3 Series III speakers

Thanks for all the help!

1. if the record is dirty clean it as it could damage your stylus and record...

2. the needle does damage the record if its incorrectly setup.. tracking force needed for that cart should be around 1.5 - 2.5 g set TF to somewhere in those parameters (1.8g is probably the best) and you will get a long life out of playing the record... please note you will need to do other things to prolong record life ie storage, cleaning etc (search function is a good one :)

3. its a dirty record clean it.. with a clean record you will get the odd crackle but nothing major...

4. you will need to look at the manual... i have no idea about that turntable... some TT have pitch control i dont know if this does though.

have fun with it ... like i said before too alot of this can be found with search :)

I've done a lot of research on the turntable, and I don't think i can adjust it.

How would you recommend cleaning a vinyl?

The tracking force is at 2. I also aligned it properly. Thanks for the help!
