skumbucket
"lamb" by christopher moore is amazing, even more so if you have a working knowledge of basic religions/theologies. i just started "the road" by cormack mccarthy and i'm really excited about it (even if it is an oprah book club choice, for fucks's sake, apparently); it won the pulitzer also, "please kill me" by legs macneil should be mandatory for everyone here. and any and all vonnegut. crime
not likely since the 4th issue just came out last week (or two weeks ago). usually they wait until there's 6 issues then it's at least a couple of months (if not a year) before the first trade comes out. it may be even longer since it's on a smaller imprint. http://www.amazon.com/Kick-Ass-HC-Mark-Millar/dp/0785132619/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223327593&sr=8-1 i didnt realize it was only six issues. do you know if these are still easy to pick up at comic shops? all what the amazon page proves is that are planning to release it sometime. it's not only 6 issues. a trade usually collects 6 issues. and they've only released 4 issues of the book so far. so i wouldn't hold my breath on the trade being out anytime soon. i know at my local shop kick ass sells out on wednesday every time i comes out (new comics come out on wednesday) so i doubt you'd be able to find them anywhere. although you are lucky they're releasing a 3rd printing of the first 4 issues this week. so if you want to pick them up i'd make sure you get to your local comic book shop on wednesday. xipander
I can't believe no one has said this yet, or maybe I'm just a geek, but... any Dragonlance book, starting with chronicles, and especially "soulforge" and "brothers in arms". And pretty much anything by Margret Wies and Tracy Hickman. And all the ravenloft books if you can find them. I guess the forgotten realms and dark sun and grey hawk and eberron campaign books are a decent read too. and the funniest book ever written: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuklear_Age Barns n Noble orderd a copy for me. It was close to $50. but it's well worth it.

cosmonaut
If you liked Chuck, pick up something by Johnathan Lethem. He jumps genres and styles from book to book, but his stories work on several different levels. I started with "Men and Cartoons"- a short story collection, which is usually a good place to start with author's that have a lot of output. A good novel of his is "As She Climbed Across the Table." You also would probably like "Perv" by Jerry Stahl. I said this in the other thread about books, but I can't reccommend "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole enough. Favorite book of all time. Confederacy of Dunces is my favorite too. I re-read it every year or two.

I also recommend David Sedaris, his books make me laugh out loud at times. I recently read 1776 by David McCullough....fascinating stuff and highly recommended if you're into history. hickey
If you haven't read any of these, they're worth it: The Road - Cormac McCarthy Fortress Of Solitude - Jonathan Lethem Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathan Lethem MVP - James Boice (it may be James Boyce) The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay - Michael Chabon The Yiddish Policemen's Union - Michael Chabon
crime
I'm reading Crooked Little Vein and it's good thus far. that's an amazing book. i was going to recommend it but anyone i've told to read it so far who wasn't familiar with ellis' comics didn't like it. i love how it's essentially an extention of desolation jones. casey
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay - Michael Chabon The Yiddish Policemen's Union - Michael Chabon Anything by Chabon is good, but I wish he'd ditch the "genre fiction" kick and go back to stuff like Mysteries of Pittsburgh and WonderBoys. shanehennessey
I just finished More Terrible Than Death by Robin Kirk for my Drugs, War & Democracy class. It's really good if you want to learn about the Colombian drug trade, La Violencia and all the paramilitary/guerilla action.

Also I really am enjoying all these recommendations. Overwelming, but it's cool that we all stop to read a book once in awhile.
xadamhudsonx
U.S.- a novel by Cryis Bachelder It's about left wing crazies who keep resurecting the corpse of Upton Sinclair to continue his socialist writing/speaking and right wing crazies who keep assasinating him to keep him from spreading said socialist propaganda. Same author wrote Bear vs. Shark (another amazing novel about our dependence on media)
