I'm having some serious issues with my desktop. I am currently on my laptop trying to figure out what the F to do.

Here are some of the symptoms:

*Symantec Antivirus won't open

*AdAware will install, ask me to reboot computer to finish install, when rebooted, nothing happens and program won't open

*Can't drag files on the desktop or in folders - you can select them, right click them and delete them, but that's it - can't copy and paste

*Won't connect to internet using Safari, Explorer, or Mozilla

*Graphics have reverted to Windows 95 look even though in the control panel it's set for Windows XP

*Just before this happened I was having instances when I'd enter a search term into google, click on one of the results, and get taken to a completely different page altogether

*tried repairing Antivirus, no dice - windows installer won't work

*tried running antivirus in safe mode - no dice

I'm sure it's infected with some sort of virus. However, since I can't access my antivirus program, nor do I have any idea what version it is, or how long my subscription is for, nor can I do anything with AdAware or SpyBot or anything else, I'm at a bit of a loss here. Is a total reboot my only option? I want to salvage the tons of stuff that's on this computer. I'm not sure why AdAware or Antivirus didn't spot this malicious shit as it was coming in.

Anyhow, if anyone can help at all, hit me up on AIM: JWEXLER

I will pay you with a free record or two for your time if you can actually help!

A system restore is a great start.

Go to Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore

Restore your computer to a time when you knew it was functioning correctly.

Once that's done come back and read this stuff below.

Is everything ok? Cool.

If not...

Install this Anti-Virus:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

(Get rid of Norton, that dude is a joke)

Are there any weird programs in your add/remove program lists? What are they, Google their names towards hints at a virus.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at the Task Manager, anything really weird in there? Again, Google the name. Look for odd things that try to spoof known services.

Are you able to change your display settings?

What page are you being redirected to when going to Google?

I had the same issue with the Google search thing. It would take me to whatever page it wanted to, usually with some sort of porn on there. I've always been pretty good at getting rid of viruses on my own, but this one I actually had to take to Geek Squad. They said that they used my laptop in their meeting to demonstrate how this new kind of virus can infect a system. They did get me back in working order but my hardrive crashed soon after.

1. I don't think system restore will work for your situation, but try.

2. Back up everything, NOW!!!

3. Uninstall Norton and use the link for Avast, Mcafee is what I use now and it's very good. I've had luck with Panda antivirus as well, it seemed to be able to find and delete things that the other ones couldn't.

good luck
