Please don't take this like I'm being a dick, because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are a lot of intelligent people who are against "free" health care. First of all, there's no such thing as free. We will pay for it. And I don't know if you've noticed but everything the government gets involved in costs WAY more than it should. Remember the $5,000 toilet seat?

The insurance companies are not opposing universal health care strongly. Doesn't that make your at least wonder? What sort of secret deal do they have going on? Will they administer the new plan?

You liberals are all happy now with Obama in office. But what if he passes this thing, then Republicans take over? That means a Republican will be in charge of your healthcare. That sounds incredible, huh?

I'm not saying there's no way to do this thing. Maybe so. But we need to really, really think about it and debate it first. Remember social security and how fucked that is before you dive headlong into "free" healthcare.

This. By in large when the government interjects itself into an industry the pie gets divided more equally (sometimes) but the whole pie usually gets a lot smaller. That isn't to say that the system as it stands today is good. It is certainly not to defend the idiots in that video.

Nevertheless, a lot of the costs and flaws in the way health care is being run in the US now has to do with the tax system's treatment of benefits, which has caused health insurance to be tied to employment (this being a response to the wage controls the govern put in place by FDR during WWII); this is obviously bad because health insurance is probably most important to the unemployed.

It has also caused people to use health insurance to pay for every health related expense (instead of just the big things). Both these things and a number of others have caused health care costs to skyrocket over the past 60 years.

I could go on, but the long and short of it is the health care bill that sits in Congress now is the worst of both worlds: its not a single payer, it doesn't allow insurance companies to compete across state lines, it doesn't require insurers to be nonprofit corporations, etc.

It will much up the system with more bureaucracy and less efficiency. It will be more expensive and provide less. You can disagree with me of course, but don't say you hate being an American. If you hate it, you can renounce your citizenship pretty easily. In a few years you could be Canadian, British, Irish, or whatever you want. Do it.

I am not proud of everything America has done or continues to do, but that would be the case in any country. I am glad that I am American, and if I thought I would rather be something else, I would make it happen.

Hello dude, i don't and wouldn't take it as you being a dick, like you said every one is entitled to their opinion and i'm sure the idiots depicted in those kinds of videos are the minority and i think you make a valid point. Also, i am naturally going to be slightly bias because i am use to the NHS and paying for it.

I understand it wouldn't be "free" as you would have increased taxes or something like our NI contributions. I was just thinking, and that is only if they operate it like the NHS, that rather than a fee for treatment like the present case or paying a fixed insurance fee you would be paying a contribution based on your income this means that people that can not afford insurance or pay to see a doctor now would be forced to pay a smaller fee and those who were wealthy would pay more and give the opportunity for everyone to receive decent health care as apposed to those who can afford it pay a fixed sum and others go with out.

The worst case scenario is you will be paying the same amount for your health care but others will be benefiting from that contribution which in my opinion is a good thing.

The only negative side of the bill i can see is the strain on resources and infrastructure from the influx of all the people who have gone with out treatment who are only now eligible to seek medical care, but after the initial stages these problems should iron themselves out.

What it all really boils down to is not what "side" you're on... not if you're a Republican or a Democrat... not if you're a Conservative or a Liberal... it comes down to just being human. I hardly make any money, and I don't mind paying extra if it means it goes towards helping someone in need; and even if it's going to be taken advantage of I still don't mind, because someone will deservedly benefit from it, and that's good enough for me.

That is just code for "set up shop in the states with no regulation," it's the same reason all the credit card companies are set up in deleware because the state laws there are fucking clown shoes when it comes to regulation.

My biggest gripe is that people can make money off health insurance. If profit is the motive, it will never be genuine health coverage.

The problem is right now there's the proposed plan and there's no plan. Health care is one of the fast rising costs in America and is one of the country's and its citizen's biggest expense. I'm not a big fan of the bill. I feel it's toothless and at this point will end up costing more money for not enough benefit. I support a public option or a single payer system and yes it will cost. But someone much smarter than myself explained that countries with universal health care didn't go, "Is it cost effective to do this?" They said, "It's important for all of our people to have health care, let's find a way to make it happen." We sit here and say, "we don't want Canadian health care, or English health care" but every other industrialized, western nation looks at America and goes, "We don't want American health care."

But what's the option at this point? A new plan that is basically going to require that all American's buy new health care and that insurance companies can set up shop in any state in a race to the bottom in terms of regulation and oversight, or continue on the same, awful path we're on? Both seem pretty shitty.

Maybe the bill isn't perfect (is anything done by the government perfect?), but it is a start. I sure could have used some commie health care when I fractured my elbow on Tuesday...instead, I have to pay over $600 for 3 visits that would cost an insured person about 75% less (with a $50 copay).

A lot of it has to do with culture. The USA is separated by water from other nations and it actively trying to build a wall between the only connected nations. European nations are much more numerous and compact and have seen more wars that required cooperation to end. I'm not gonna try to argue against anyone here. I just think that is a factor that should looked at. Centuries of history can really get people stuck in a rut. Enlightening their ignorance becomes impossible. My career path is going to involve trying to change these systems (conflict, policies, ideas) for the better, but I'm definitely leaving this god forsaken country to further my education in that area.

Are protests in Europe as idiotic as these or do they make better points? Even signs I see around here (lets face it, I do live in Kansas, and way too close to Fred Phelps for that matter) have no persuasive or informative information on them. I loved the politician from Iowa comparing the tea-baggers and their protest to the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. A revolution that got the Czech and Slovak people FREE health care.

Not to stereotype, but I'm sure the majority of the crowd there didn't know what the Velvet Revolution was, they just figured it had something to with Communist Russia.

And as we know, Obama=Communism, Socialism, Fascism, Hitler, Stalin, Mao and whoever else Glenn Beck can fit on his chalkboard.
