A couple buddies and I hiked about 20 miles of it around the Pennsylvania/Maryland border. Fun, but I couldn't imagine doing the whole thing. suburbanargyle
I hiked a small part of it and camped out there, in the Virginia part of it. I think I remember it being pretty awesome. I definitely saw a cool waterfall and a huge buck.
hankmurphy
I hiked through most of Virgina during a 2-week trip when I was 12. The trail passes near my house, and I regularly wander around out there. I found a secret mountain lake filled with newts and got super-lost the last time I went out! I think I remember hearing that it takes over 6 month to do the whole thing both ways...

oakland
Before you go read "Into the Woods" by Bill Bryson. Or listen to it on audio book. It's funny but incredibly informative, as are all his "travel" books.
