Number of tracks per side????

Recommended Posts

I just got Metric-Live it out lp...

It has 10 track but, it comes on two 12'' discs with 2-3 tracks per side....

I see that each track takes A LOT more space on the disc...

And it plays a 33 rpm...

Maybe it is a dumb question, but i wanna know WHY??

Is the quality supposed to be far better?

It's the first time i see a lp made this way....

many reasons. er, at least 2.

some old albums have (like meat puppet's "too high to die" for instance) have changed the tracks order to accommodate for the time limitations of each records side, and to avoid having to press a second disc. and some labels press less music per side (like sunny day's reissue of lp2, both discs have lots of dead vinyl in the run off groove) to improve the sound and preserve the classic order of the songs.

so it's really up to the band/label what happens, save money or artistic preservation/ improvement in quality.

All Subtle and Themselves records are pressed this way. Most of the albums could easily fit on one disc in a traditional 5 to 6 track per side configuration but there is tons of dead wax on each side of the 2 discs in most cases. The albums are all excellent sounding however. Noticeably better than most single discs that fit the standard time capacity for a single LP.
