xadamhudsonx
I'm going to be in Phoenix for three weeks (July 10th-29th) for work. Phoenix friends, what should I do while I am there? Where should I eat? What should I see while there? shows? record stores? etc... I will have a rental car, so no worries about distance really. My work likes to send me to places at the worst time to be there. Last year was Tampa FL in August and Salt Lake City in November. Now it's Phoenix in July. But I'd go nuts sitting in a hotel room the whole time.
damianzamora
Phoenix is way too god damn hot, but there is always some good shows. The big venue is the marquee, but I hate large venues, definitely check out Martini Ranch, Rhythm Room and the clubhouse for smaller venues with great bands coming through. Check out Kinch they are from Tempe and just got off a tour with Jimmy Eat World. As for record shops, there is a few zia records there, stinkweeds, tracks in wax are other record stores, and i believe Frazier Mart is from there as well. And for food you have to try Honey Bear's BBQ, There is a lot of bars around the university area on Mill Ave, there is a bar called "The Bar" that has a one armed bar tender, that was pretty crazy. There is an awesome dueling piano bar on mill.
deafmx
http://www.yelp.com/biz/amados-mexican-food-tempe-2 this is really all i suggest for food. i miss that place all the time between midnight and 6am. haha. if it's too far, there's all kinds of places similar around Phoenix too record stores: (which i haven't been to in forever) http://www.stinkweeds.com http://www.ziarecords.com (also had a record store setup at Coachella for RSD this year) http://www.revolveraz.com (never heard of this place until today but the reviews seem promising) The Clubhouse was legit. i've only seen one show there. it seems most of the places i used to go are shutdown now. Nita's, Bash On Ash, Modified, Web Theatre, etc. Celebrity is still around but there isn't much happening, but i'm sure you'll want to check this out: http://www.celebritytheatre.com/upcoming.php?viewevent=
adamlikesmusic
There's a ton of smaller venues to check out as well. The Nile Theater just reopened last year, they've been having tons of shows there and in the basement (The Underground). I think Alkaline Trio/Smoking Popes are playing there the end of the month, if that's your thing. Chaser's has some pretty decent punk shows, but is otherwise a shit hole. The Trunk Space was cool, but I haven't seen a show there in a while. Don't know if that's still around. Modified Arts closed a couple years ago, as did The Sets. I've been out of the loop for a while on shows, but some helpful sites: www.silverplatter.info www.niletheater.com www.luckymanonline.com www.azpunk.com (Site is pretty hard to navigate. I haven't used in years, but it's probably still updated.) As for record stores, there isn't too much. Zia is cool, but they're not too huge in the vinyl department. They're part record store, part FYE. Stinkweeds is cool, but very tiny. Had a couple close recently, which sucks when so few exist to begin with. (There's a handful of others, but I haven't been myself) www.ziarecords.com www.stinkweeds.com In terms of food, there's tons to choose from. Cheba Hut is a pretty cool place that started in Tempe and now has grown to a handful of other states. Weed-themed sub sandwiches, pretty fun place. Tempe's also got the Chuck Box, which I've been going to my entire life. Place rules. Inexpensive, and great food (burgers mostly). Not really sure if you're looking for nice sit-down type places, or more of the seat yourself type joints. Those would be the latter. www.chebahut.com http://thechuckbox.com/ If you're into baseball, the Diamondbacks haven't been terrible as of late. Not sure what their schedule looks like, but it's never too bad a time. Dunno what else. If there's anything specific, I'd probably be much better for info. I suck with suggestions. Edit - dumb typos

xadamhudsonx
Thanks everyone who's given a helping hand so far. I'm thinking about a day trip to Grand Canyon one of the Saturday or Sundays I am there. Good idea or bad idea?

xadamhudsonx
Does anybody know anything about the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe? Nothington is going to be there on the 20th. Anyone been there?
adamlikesmusic
Date has already passed, but Yucca Tap Room has a lot of smaller shows. All shows are 21+, some are free. Not a bad place, from what I hear. (Sorry for not replying sooner, life has been busy lately)
