bigbruise
I'm experiencing white noise coming from my speakers, I believe it's being created by my amp. The volume can be turned down to 0, and the white noise is still present. When volume is turned up, white noise does not follow, it stays at a level volume. When I gently tap the top of the amp it will either get louder, quieter, squeak (rarely), or go away completely. So, for instance, if I hear white noise I'll tap (louder), tap (quieter), tap (louder), and tap(gone/silent). Sometimes one tap, sometimes many, each time I touch a different spot. I was thinking maybe grounds, but they're nice and secure. Maybe an internal ground on the amp? Ummm, the way its set up? Nothing is stacked though. Not really finding anything worth while on Google or Audio Karma, and didn't see anything on here. The manual does not discuss this either. Standard budget set up: Pro-Ject Carbon Marantz PM-6004 American Acoustics speakers. Blue Jean Cables (12 AWG)
David Loyd
How long have you had the amp? bigbruise
bigbruise
2 weeks.
David Loyd
Is it something that just started or has it been present from the beginning? bigbruise
Tardcore
I would try swapping out different interconnects and a non-vinyl source and so forth...but probably wind up just returning for a replacement. bigbruise
xxmartinxx
Disconnect everything except speakers, see if still makes the noise. If it does, it's a problem with the amp. bigbruise
allenh
Disconnect everything except speakers, see if still makes the noise. If it does, it's a problem with the amp. If it stops then plug stuff back in one by one until it starts again bigbruise

bigbruise
What in the amp could be disrupted to create this?
allenh
Quite a few things, bad connections, dry solder joint, bad ground, dying electrolytic capacitors to name a few. Send it back for replacement. bigbruise
bigbruise
Thanks everybody for your input, I went ahead and sent it back.
cptblicero
Hey, just stumbled onto this thread through doing some googling; been having the exact same problem with my brand new Marantz PM6004. Sometimes I turn it on and no hiss, other times I turn the unit on and there is massive hiss with the volume all the way down--a little tapping on top usually quiets it down...for a bit.Bigbruise, did you get a replacement unit/figure out what the problem was?
