  1. Hey everyone. I wanted to introduce myself in this thread. I've been working in the specialty coffee industry for a few years and work for an SF based roaster. I can definitely help answer any and all coffee questions: general info, sourcing, roasting, brewing, espresso, etc. If anyone here is ever interested in going to a coffee cupping in SF send me a PM and I can set something up. I haven't dug through the previous pages of this thread, but I'm stoked it exists. Question to the thread: what are you guys currently drinking and how are you brewing it? A friend just dropped off a a sample of some Honduran coffee and I've been brewing it a chemex at home.
  2. I ordered the Uber Modi 2 and didn't notice a huge difference regarding TV and video games. I did notice an improvement in audio quality via the Apple TV. It wasn't a mind blowing difference - but enough for me justifying keeping the DAC. My TV seems to have higher gain through the "headphone" port than through optical - wasn't expecting that.
  3. Shoot me a PM for the Skull Kid figurine
  4. I really enjoy my Wii U - been playing a bit more lately than my PS4 since I'm a bit burned out on Destiny. If anyone here want's to play smash online add me! My nintendo ID: is heylepe
  5. Anyone on the board actively playing the Wii U version of this game? A friend of mine has my 3DS copy at the moment, but I play the Wii U version a few times a week. My nintendo ID is: heylepe
  6. I recently incorporated a Schiit Modi 2 Uber into my system. Went with the Uber so I could also have access to a USB input. Apple TV only supports up to 16-bit files, so if you have 24-bit files you'll have to find another way to feed the audio into your system.
  7. I was given a set of Polk Monitor 50s for my living room setup. Had not previously used any floorstanding speakers that had two sets of binding posts. Not sold on them yet - they are replacing a pair of Pioneer bookshelf speakers (BS41) that I was quite fond of. How do you like that Onkyo amp so far? I almost sprung for that amp but settled on a Marantz PM 5004 instead.
  8. These have been popping up on craigslist a lot recently. I've seen the Polk Monitor 50s at 80 bucks - wasn't sure if those were going to be any good. There is a set of TSI 400s near me for 250, but I haven't read a ton about hose speakers. Thanks for all the input fellas. I have some bookshelf speakers that work fairly well, but I wanted something that had just a bit more in the low end.
  9. I'm going to bump this thread - I have the same Marantz inegrated amp and am curious if floor standing speakers worked out. I just got rid of my subwoofer, so I wanted something that had a deeper low end than my bookshelf speakers.
  10. So I'm guessing a 3.5 -> RCA splitter is a bad call? I was not able to find any good information on the DAC included in my samsung TV, even after contacting customer service. I will do a side by side listening test to see if I notice any improvements from the optical out -> DAC -> amp vs. the 3.5 -> RCA splitter -> amp.
  11. Thanks for the input, folks. I went with the PM5004 and will pick up a Schitt Modi about a month down the road.
  12. That 5004 price is sweet, the lowest I've been able to find at the moment is $340. Doesn't sound like a bad deal, but it means I would have to buy a standalone DAC if the output on my TV isn't cutting it.
  13. Maybe I should clarify - my TV has a headphone output that I've been running to my HK. The only other option for sound output is an optical out. Its a reasonably good TV and it has four HDMI inputs, so I can hook up anything without having to swap HDMI cables. Because it only has a "headphone" output, I figured the DAC in wasn't great. I've been eyeballing the Marantz PM6005 since it has both optical inputs, a phono pre-amp, and great reviews. It's also twice the price.
  14. That's what I've got going on as well. My TV thankfully has an analog output, so I just route all my HDMI inputs through the TV. I'll look into the Cambridge Audio piece, but I wanted to minimize the components connected to the stereo which is why the Onkyo seemed so attractive. Built in DAC and phono pre-amp. Not opposed to springing for a standalone pre-amp and DAC. Thanks for the input fellas. Looks like I'll be canceling the repair on my HK and getting a new amp.
