  1. Hey everyone. I wanted to introduce myself in this thread. I've been working in the specialty coffee industry for a few years and work for an SF based roaster. I can definitely help answer any and all coffee questions: general info, sourcing, roasting, brewing, espresso, etc. If anyone here is ever interested in going to a coffee cupping in SF send me a PM and I can set something up. I haven't dug through the previous pages of this thread, but I'm stoked it exists. Question to the thread: what are you guys currently drinking and how are you brewing it? A friend just dropped off a a sample of some Honduran coffee and I've been brewing it a chemex at home.
  2. I ordered the Uber Modi 2 and didn't notice a huge difference regarding TV and video games. I did notice an improvement in audio quality via the Apple TV. It wasn't a mind blowing difference - but enough for me justifying keeping the DAC. My TV seems to have higher gain through the "headphone" port than through optical - wasn't expecting that.
  3. Shoot me a PM for the Skull Kid figurine
  4. I really enjoy my Wii U - been playing a bit more lately than my PS4 since I'm a bit burned out on Destiny. If anyone here want's to play smash online add me! My nintendo ID: is heylepe
  5. Anyone on the board actively playing the Wii U version of this game? A friend of mine has my 3DS copy at the moment, but I play the Wii U version a few times a week. My nintendo ID is: heylepe
  6. I recently incorporated a Schiit Modi 2 Uber into my system. Went with the Uber so I could also have access to a USB input. Apple TV only supports up to 16-bit files, so if you have 24-bit files you'll have to find another way to feed the audio into your system.
  7. I was given a set of Polk Monitor 50s for my living room setup. Had not previously used any floorstanding speakers that had two sets of binding posts. Not sold on them yet - they are replacing a pair of Pioneer bookshelf speakers (BS41) that I was quite fond of. How do you like that Onkyo amp so far? I almost sprung for that amp but settled on a Marantz PM 5004 instead.
  8. These have been popping up on craigslist a lot recently. I've seen the Polk Monitor 50s at 80 bucks - wasn't sure if those were going to be any good. There is a set of TSI 400s near me for 250, but I haven't read a ton about hose speakers. Thanks for all the input fellas. I have some bookshelf speakers that work fairly well, but I wanted something that had just a bit more in the low end.
  9. I'm going to bump this thread - I have the same Marantz inegrated amp and am curious if floor standing speakers worked out. I just got rid of my subwoofer, so I wanted something that had a deeper low end than my bookshelf speakers.
  10. So I'm guessing a 3.5 -> RCA splitter is a bad call? I was not able to find any good information on the DAC included in my samsung TV, even after contacting customer service. I will do a side by side listening test to see if I notice any improvements from the optical out -> DAC -> amp vs. the 3.5 -> RCA splitter -> amp.
  11. Thanks for the input, folks. I went with the PM5004 and will pick up a Schitt Modi about a month down the road.
  12. That 5004 price is sweet, the lowest I've been able to find at the moment is $340. Doesn't sound like a bad deal, but it means I would have to buy a standalone DAC if the output on my TV isn't cutting it.
  13. Maybe I should clarify - my TV has a headphone output that I've been running to my HK. The only other option for sound output is an optical out. Its a reasonably good TV and it has four HDMI inputs, so I can hook up anything without having to swap HDMI cables. Because it only has a "headphone" output, I figured the DAC in wasn't great. I've been eyeballing the Marantz PM6005 since it has both optical inputs, a phono pre-amp, and great reviews. It's also twice the price.
  14. That's what I've got going on as well. My TV thankfully has an analog output, so I just route all my HDMI inputs through the TV. I'll look into the Cambridge Audio piece, but I wanted to minimize the components connected to the stereo which is why the Onkyo seemed so attractive. Built in DAC and phono pre-amp. Not opposed to springing for a standalone pre-amp and DAC. Thanks for the input fellas. Looks like I'll be canceling the repair on my HK and getting a new amp.
  15. Hi folks - I've been (mostly) lurking here for years and decided it was time to formally ask for some help with my setup. I started experiencing a hissing sound in my right channel due to my receiver and I'm wondering if it's a better idea to upgrade the receiver or simply repair it. It's not out of warrant, and HK doesn't have any repair centers nearby. My setup is as follows: Turntable Pro-ject Debut Carbon w/ Ortofon 2M Red Pro-ject Speedbox S Receiver/ Preamp Harman Kardon HK 3390 (using the built-in preamp) Speakers Pioneer SP-BS21 Bookshelf Speakers and a Pioneer Sub SW-8MK2 All of this audio equipment lives in a medium/small living room, so I don't see a huge reason to upgrade to a larger set of speakers. I have my TV and gaming consoles connected to the receiver as well. An audio technician in my area said he could take a look at the receiver and replace any damaged parts for around $120. Considering I use the receiver as an airplay base station, pre-amp, and for all A/V needs should I repair it or spring for something else? Any recommendations? I'm leaning towards the Onkyo A-9050 since it also has an optical input that I can feed my TV/ Gaming systems into. Is an optical input an improvement considering I only plan on having a 2.1 system for the foreseeable future? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
  16. If you want to see some cool stats I would head over to DestinyTracker. It compiles a ton of data across all your characters, the number of raid clears, etc. As long as you have someone's username you can check their gear out, etc. Here's mine as an example. http://destinytracker.com/destiny/overview/ps/heylepe http://destinytracker.com/destiny/overview/ps/YOURUSERNAME Just make sure you hit update stats to see the newest info come up.
  17. One of my buddies got it on his first run. I had never seen it drop before. Another one of my friends got the Vex two days ago on his first HM run. Lucky bastard.
  18. 15 hard mode runs and I still don't have the Fatebringer or the Praetorian Foil. RNG is not kind to me with the HM raid drops.
  19. When you guys are 3- and 4- manning are you cheesing him? Or are you doing the two swords technique? I've only had luck with a group of 5 folks doing it legit.
  20. What console do most of you guys play on? I'm on PS4 (PSN: heylepe) - I run the HM VoG for fatebringer, CE, nightfalls, weeklies whenever I have the time. If you dudes ever need 1 more I'm happy to join. I have a group of 4-6 other dudes that are all pretty solid for the raids if there's only a few VC folks on.
  21. There's a ton of record stores all along haight st. Rasputin is a block or two away. Off Masonic you have Recycled records. In lower haight you have Rooky Ricardos and Groove Merchant. On Page and Scott is a place called Jack's Record Cellar that has a sign that just says RECORDS and seems to be open whenever he feels like showing up. On Octavia and Market is a place called Grooves - never been in before, but the diner next door is open late and pretty tasty. Welcome to SF! Where in the city are you living?
  22. This record just went up for PO! 300 on black/ 700 on pink http://kingsroadmerch.com/epitaph-records/?id=1595
  23. I originally bought the same Samsung set that someone else posted here - the F6030. It's a 3D tv with a nice panel. I ended up returning it and getting the F6300 since it had 4 HDMI ports instead of just 2. The F6300 also has some pretty cool smart tv functions, including netflix, etc.
