  1. Weird, I had no idea that these went out of print. Anyway, I checked my usual sources, to no avail. I do recall my local bookstore having some of the series when I was last there, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure that it was just issues 18 and 19. Still, I'll keep my eyes peeled the next time I'm there.
  2. I've seen him a couple of times, and he puts on a good show, but nothing that you'll be blown away by. It's pretty much just him singing at his keyboard; no more, no less. Though the first time I saw him he had brought Jenn Herbinson with him, which was awesome. I haven't listened to his new album yet, but I'm pretty excited to hear it. Etiquette was such a great step forward and I've heard that Vs Children continues that evolution.
  3. Did he sing 'his' part of the song towards the end (that finishes with "When I see you again will you still be my friend")? I've always wondered what the lyrics are to that part but have only ever been able to make out bits and pieces.
  4. Did you go to any of the Toronto shows? The Guelph crowd were saints compared to the annoying and obnoxious crowd at the Toronto show I went to. And yeah, $27 is a little steep, but it isn't all that much considering that it's in Canadian dollars and the bill consists of two relatively big bands.
  5. It's not a misprint, and it wasn't done as a joke or anything. The 'venue' that hosted said show is rarely used for that kind of show - it's more for theatre performances or bigger bands. So the place is a lot more formal, hence the use of the word 'babes' instead of babies on their tickets. Even on the place's website, they refer to babies as 'babes in arms.'
  6. Ha, I was actually at that show in Guelph last night. It was a LOT better than the Toronto one a few nights before, though assigned seating is kind of weird. And I also posted this exact same joke in my blog a while ago: http://deepmadder.blogspot.com/2009/01/odd-stipulation.html
  7. The Lawrence Arms - Ghost Stories Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Etiquette Defiance, Ohio - Share What Ya Got Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy Microphones (or Mt Eerie) - The Glow, Pt 2 The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving The Honor System - Single File The Cure - Disintegration
  8. For serious. They really annoyed me, and then I later found out that members used to be in Jersey, who also used to really annoy me (or at least late-era Jersey did).
  9. I have a real rollercoaster opinion on this band. I loved them in the New Kind of Army era, but turned on them when Underground Network came out. I didn't pay much attention to them for years, but then For Blood and Empire came out, and for some reason I really liked that album. But then I didn't have much interest in Bright Lights... Still, I feel somewhat excited by this news, so I guess I'm back to being interested in them.
  10. This game is pretty fun, but if you're playing through for the first time, here's some (spoiler-free) advice: When you're around 70-75% of the way through the game, make sure to start some new save files and not save over the old one. Because at around 80% or so through the game, you CANNOT go back and do side-missions that you hadn't yet finished (including once you've beaten the game). That drove me crazy, especially since there were some easy side mission-based Xbox 360 achievements that I didn't get simply because I would've had to start the game all over again to be able to do them.
  11. I did it for a little while to try and get a foot in the door for a full-time teaching position. But the demand for new teachers here right now is non-existent, so I decided to do more school instead of relying on sub work. It is a pretty nice job at times, but I found it way too inconsistent and unstable for my liking.
  12. Ecco the Dolphin came with my Sega Genesis when I was a kid, and it was thus the only game I owned for a while. I'm often wonder why it didn't turn me off video games altogether since I'm pretty sure I was the worst ever at that game. I would play it for hours on end and make almost no progress.
  13. Here was what they played during the Toronto show, as best as I can remember. I'm pretty sure I have every song listed, though it's unfortunately mostly not in order (I did try to give an extremely rough approximation). You guys can point out what stuff I got wrong: Great Expectations (this was the opening song) Boomboxes and Dictionaries High Lonesome Even Cowgirls Get the Blues Senor and the Queen Old White Lincoln '59 Sound Wooderson Meet Me By The River's Edge Miles Davis & the Cool We Came To Dance Casanova, Baby Angry Johnny and the Radio Film Noir The Patient Ferris Wheel Here's Looking At You, Kid The Backseat (I think this might have been the last song from the regular set) Encore: Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts I'da Called You Woody, Joe (I can't remember if this and the previous song were part of the regular set or the encore, but I'm leaning towards the latter) 1930 Say I Won't (Recognize) (final song of the encore)
  14. I don't mind Good News... or We Were Dead. While I still choose Moon & Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West the majority of the time I'm in the mood to listen to Modest Mouse, I still think their most recent 2 albums are good. And while they're admittedly somewhat of a departure from the earlier stuff, I don't find the difference quite as drastic as you do.
  15. I actually still buy a fair number of CDs, and I'd definitely pick up CDs of the various Fat bands I'm interested in from VC if you folks were selling them for cheap. But it certainly seems I'm the minority here (and I only listen to 3 or 4 Fat bands in the first place), so I'm not sure if you'd have a lot of interest on the whole.
  16. This is a great album - my friend picked it up for me a few years ago, and I couldn't thank him enough for it. However, someone who's getting this repress should give me their download coupon.
  17. Weird - that 'airstrike' is like 10 minutes away from my family house where I grew up.
  18. I preordered it, though the exorbitant from-Canada-to-Canada shipping costs were a bit hard to swallow.
  19. Mount Eerie's "Live in Copenhagen" is such an awesome record - someone should make an offer on it (it's actually 3xLP, by the way).
  20. While on the subject of No Idea, is it just me or is their shipping calculator not working? (http://www.noidearecords.com/ordering.php )
  21. Holy shit, thank you. I caught this movie on the Documentary channel a whole bunch of years ago and I absolutely loved it. It's only somewhat about record collecting though - it's more about loneliness, isolation, and depression, and the compulsions they foster - so a lot of people may be disappointed. The film functions as more of a biography on the director, which incidentally includes his record collecting. He does interview some interesting people though, including Harvey motherfucking Pekar. I've been trying to track down this movie for a long while, and came across a blog that posted it, but Alan Zweig (the director) asked him if he could remove it since he was working on a DVD version and needed all the money he could get from it. The DVD version was going to include a different edit of the film that was more of a 'standard' documentary about collecting, rather than being so much about him. This was a couple years ago that I read Zweig talking about it, and the DVD was supposed to be done long ago as well. Zweig's internet presence disappeared and I haven't been able to find anything about a DVD release, so I guess it fell by the wayside.
  22. I'm not 100% sure. I'm guessing Brendan, but I suppose it could've just as easily been Chris. I don't really know what either of their writing looks like.
  23. Sorry, I don't think I'll ever part with it, but here's a picture I took when I received it. If you look at the centre of the LP fold-out on the left, you can see the same lyrics for comparison.
  24. A couple years ago I bought a single lot off of eBay that included the blue Oh Calcutta!, the original handwritten lyrics for Recovering The Opposable Thumb (from the punknews.org contest), and a Lawrence Arms t-shirt. I paid $70. It's crazy how much the market has changed since then.
