While we're on the subject of post-metal, that new Labirinto album is incredible. Just finished up my first listen and I know there's a tendency to get overhyped early but this is some of the best music I've heard out of the genre in a long time. All the right levels of energy, riffage, momentum, quality production, balanced vocals, etc... Seriously, don't sleep on this.

Listened to it this morning and was pleasantly surprised. Honestly can't remember the last pure Post Metal album that landed this well with me.

I need to listen to this a few more times, but it definitely has the potential to be one of my favorite Post Metal albums of the year.

Also, Wander has a new album coming out and I finally checked out their first single.  I think I still prefer "Mourning" over anything they've done because it has a bit more of an edge to it, but the new song March isn't bad!  Nothing groundbreaking, but one of the melodies keeps sticking in my head so I guess that's a good sign.

I love Wander. The single is actually my least favorite song off this new record. Fortunately I had a chance to listen to the advance promo and loved it. It's in the same lines as the previous release. Lots of energy and melody but the songs are a bit longer.

So no one checked this out??  I won’t be offended if you all hate it haha.  Just seemed like a fitting band to check out with all this Isis/Rosetta speak.

Yeah I did! It's not for me though. I'm more and more over the blast beats and screeching vocals. I like them on occasion (Deafheaven, Alcest) but it didn't work for me here.

I just wish they were spacier.  Their songs never build towards a definable peak for me

It's just not what they're about. There are other bands that can do what you would eventually want RC to do.

Okay this is a HARD shift but HOLY FUCK.  So, we just went to dinner for my late-friend's mom's birthday and on the ride back, Kyle's childhood neighbor (who loves black metal, death metal, power metal.... etc) puts on this band.  I'm like "......dude what?  This is post-rock....."  He's like "Really?  I listen to all kinds of stuff."  And i'm like "Yeah why the fuck have you been holding out on this???"

Fucking listen to this guys.  Derek, this one is for you.  It's post-rock but this is waaaaay different.  All of you need to hear this.  It moves from ethereal, dreamy shoegaze/post-rock to blackgaze.  FFO:  Show Me A Dinosaur, TRNA, old Alcest maybe?  I get BIG TRNA vibes from this though at some points, and then other times they're super ethereal.  Also pay attention to the bass player... he's very prominent in the mix and it really gives the music a unique vibe.

Again, overhype. Nothing new and not doing anything for me. Glad it works for you though.

They are the most consistently great instrumental band in existence imo.

Basically, yeah.  Caspian is a close second.

Yes and yes! Very close second though.

Brian Cook might be my all-time favorite bassist, too.

At least in the genre yes. One of the most solid I've heard. It's just such a complete band overall.

I could care less about Russian Circles honestly, so you guys can have them.

Thanks, I'll keep them! Russian Circles know how to make songs interesting and not just chug away for 8 mins like most instrumental Post Metal bands. Super dynamic, great riffs and the best drumming.

However, I struggle daily with whether or not I think A Determinism of Morality is better than Oceanic.  Rosetta is SO GOOD.

While Determinism is great, in my opinion, it's nowhere as good as any of the Isis albums (except for maybe Celestial).

Sounds like a strong contender for Gumbo's other other AOTY.

Ahahahahah. How many are we at right now?

So I know I was ripping on Gumbo’s The Sun Burns Bright last year for their Mad Libs approach to post-rock songwriting & song titling, but I gotta say this new one is killer.  Makes me want to revisit that first album.  This one is still pretty cookie cutter but there are well blended layers of heavy & light & ambient.  Nice builds & payoffs.  Each song holds your interest way better than ‘Through Dusk...’ did.

But I gotta say, putrid font choice.  My God.  The album art is fantastic but then someone went “Microsoft Word document” on top of it.

     http://thesunburnsbright.bandcamp.com/album/longing-for-a-place-yet-to-be-seen

I have to say, this new album is pretty decent. Sounds less "forced", predictable and by the numbers than their first album. I remember that every single song in that album had pretty much the same structure and the whole thing was super boring.

I also realized I hadn't listened to the new Glasir album that much. I loved their Unborn EP but haven't given this one a decent chance yet. Gave it a go last night and almost fell asleep. Don't know if it was just off pure tiredness or if the album is simply boring. Need to give it another go with another mood.

Also, and please don't hate me, but that new The End Of The Ocean album is really growing on me. Didn't do much for me at first but, having listened to it about 5 or 6 times now, I get it.

Lights and Motion just sucks I’m sorry. They (he?) take the most boring parts or post-rock & turn them into entire albums.  It’s like someone saying they love beer but say Michelob Ultra is their favorite.

This made me laugh out loud. So accurate!

Holy ever living shit.  Stop what you are doing and listen to this song.

Album of the year contender if the rest of it holds up to this.

Finally some solid stuff! Let's not exaggerate though. It's very solid, Seeress are a good band but AOTY?

New year means new tunes.  What are you guys looking forward to for 2019?

New End of the Ocean in < 2 weeks.

Caspian confirmed to start recording a new record in the next few months.  Also wondering if they’re going to stick to their plans to do a 10-year anniversary / re-recording of Tertia.  Potentially a very busy year for them.

Russian Circles confirmed they’ll be back in the studio to record in the coming months.  LP7 and they haven’t missed a beat in my books.

New Pelican is something I’m cautiously optimistic about.  I enjoyed the new tracks they’ve been playing live.

The upcoming Mono release leaked and it’s a lot better than I thought it’d be.  Great start to the year for those guys.  I didn’t hate their last couple of releases or anything, but that new album is way more solid.

Maserati should be done recording their latest album.  I have to admit that even with the weird vocoder stuff they’ve been doing on their last few albums, I come back to them quite a bit and enjoy what I hear.  Instant order from TRL when they decide to drop it.

And I’m also pretty interested in the new Lost in the Riots album, to scratch that riffy ASIWYFA itch.

Hopefully I didn’t forget anything.  Solid year for post-rock and post-metal, potentially.

From those, I really can't wait for Caspian, Russian Circles. I've already listened to the new The End of the Ocean and it's phenomenal.

This year, I'm also looking forward to the new Wander, We Lost the Sea, Cult of Luna, Old Solar, Catacombe and maybe Fourteen Nights at Sea and Cloudkicker.

I bought it through Deathwish with the black friday discount and got it in last week. I've only listened to the whole thing through maybe three or four times, but my general take is that it's solid, if a little underwhelming. Definitely worth owning, and I think the first three songs are killer, but there's not a whole lot about the back half that's stuck out to me thus far. L'Effondras did the whole sprawling, no-build thing the best on their last album, and this doesn't quite live up to that. What do you think?

    I honestly don't know where I stand.

I listened to the album 3 times. I loved it the first time, second time I picked up some flaws and the third time I enjoyed it more again.

I guess I'll listen to it more before the end of the year and see where it sits.

Heck yeah, this clocks in just under one hour and I'm already 3 listens in!!

It's sort of a convergence of postrock and shoegaze. If you have the postrock, experimental, prog background with patience for 7+ minute tracks, it's a great place to hear different subtypes of shoegaze.

First half is weight towards more heavy, dark  gloomgaze like KEEP (which I would have preferred for the whole album - def would be AOTY), and the second half a bit on the lighter side with occasional heavy moments. Track 7 is like Bilinda Butchers doing The Appleseed Cast LLO era before ramping up the finish.

    Such a great album...thanks again @deafening Xo

This is one of the best things I've heard this year. Love it!

Sometimes bands have immense talent but just have no clue how to write good songs.  This band has the cringiest name, cringy song titles, & the song structures are so basic & cliche I want to cry, but it’s hard to look past the talented musicians here.  It reminds me of a post-metal Lights & Motion.  Nice piano & orchestral moments just bogged down by the inability to write a uniquely structured song.  I can’t speak to any of this in technical terms, but I’m sure it’s obvious what I mean if you listen.  Every song basically has the same 4/4 pattern and the same tempo.  I want to simultaneously love & hate this album more than I do lol.

The intermittent vocals are also hit or miss.  If anyone wants a random listen, I’d be very curious if you can better put into words what I’m trying to say.

Saw someone hype this on FB the other day. Listened to it and couldn't anymore for more than 2 minutes. Just way too bland more me.
