I have a Marntz 2238 reciever , modest power which creates problems finding good modern speakers to use with it . Anybody else have a 2238 or thereabouts & if so what speakers have you paired with it ?

I paired mine with Acoustic Research AR-2a. I live in a NYC apartment so I can't go crazy but what the neighbors were willing to tolerate sounded great.

  2. Do not let anyone help you buy Metro tickets in Paris. They will try and they will do their best to convince you that they're legit---their English is probably better than your French. If you can't figure out the kiosk on your own or it won't take your ATM card---go to a window and purchase tickets there.

Going to the Eiffel Tower is fine if you just want to see it and not access it. There's no line for that and the crowds aren't crazy.

The wife and I are visiting London and Paris in a few months for the first time and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips?  Places to eat, record stores, places to visit, places not to visit? Also the catacombs in Paris look really cool. Are the tours worth it? I know the lines can be long. Thanks!

My favorite restaurant in Paris is Le Soleil Gourmand. It's located in Montmartre (Sacre Couer). Definitely check out Musee D'Orsay, Pere Lachaise Cemetery and Notre Dame. Then there's plenty more to choose from: Eiffel Tower, Pompidou Centre, Picasso Museum, Louvre, etc. depending on how long you're staying. I've been to a few record stores in Paris but I can't remember the names. I was looking for French stuff like Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy. There are a few good stores near the Bastille District.

I've never been to the catacombs.

Definitely go to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Tate Modern is also good. A trip to Windsor Castle is cool but that will definitely take up a day. Most of my time in London has been spent in Brixton. There are a few record stores around there. Rat Records in Camberwell is great and you should definitely check out Rough Trade which is near curry row. Brixton Market has some really good restaurants. Mama Lan is great and not too far from the market you will find Jeff the Chef who serves up some of the best jerk chicken I've ever eaten.

If you can take a day trip to Brighton, it's worth it. There are a handful of record stores and some other great shops to check out.

    Have fun.

I can't figure out what drugs I need to be on to understand this music.  I've been listening to stuff on YouTube to try to get a grasp of what these guys sound like and it's just a lot of feedback and noise to me right now.

im going to try weed first.  Then I'm going to take a few somas that are lying around.  I'll get a good buzz from some vodka after that and have some tramadol in the cabinet I'll hit after that if I still can't figure it out.

Im excited for the new album like all of you guys, but I can't figure out what state of mind I need to be in to enjoy it.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd start with "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." Give it a few listens and see what you think.

That's one tall order. There's a copy of the Ty Segall Band 7" on Discogs. I've never seen those Smog/Songs: Ohia cassettes and I've been buying their stuff forever. Good luck.

  6. Greenpoint/Williamsburg:

Record Grouch (986 Manhattan Ave.), Co-Op 87 (87 Guernsey St.) and Captured Tracks (195 Calyer St.) and Academy (85 Oak St.). You could also go to Earwax (N. 9th) in Williamsburg but I never find anything there.

After record shopping you should get some pizza at Paulie G's (Greenpoint Ave.). Then hit up Lake Street (Manhattan Ave.) for some drinks. If it's Mexican that you're craving---head to the south side of Williamsburg for tasty treats at La Superior (Berry St.). Do yourself a favor and order a Paloma to wash everything down.

  7. McIntosh MAC1900 receiver with wood case. The receiver works great and is the perfect gateway to vintage audio equipment.  $700 OBO. Ideally, this would be pick-up only. I'm in Brooklyn. If you're serious about this and need it shipped---I do have a MAC box to ship it in but it's going to be around $40 for shipping. Contact me if you want pictures or if you're interested in stopping by for a listen.

I am have a BSR 26CX and i need to know what kind of pre-amp to get. I would like a non expensive one but not really cheap.

Why a preamp and not a receiver? Are you planning on buying an amp or do you already have one? What about speakers?

  9. Finally found The Afghan Whigs 3XLP and the third LP is cracked. I've never bought a brand new record that was cracked. Used LPs from sellers who don't know how to package records---yes. But not a brand new record from a store. Argh, just threw it up on Discogs hoping that I can recoup some of my money.

  10. That turntable is for converting vinyl to a digital format. Sounds like what you really want/need is a receiver, a turntable and speakers. I have only been buying vintage equipment for the last ten years so I can't help you with the newer stuff but if you're willing to go vintage you should look in the charity shops.  I don't know what it's like in the UK but I've bought some great Pioneer receivers for under 60 pounds.
