FlaStateGuy
Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of jazz music and would REALLY like to expand my collection to include more jazz, swing, etc. from the 20s and 30s era. I love music like Annette Hanshaw (look up "Daddy Won't You Please Come Home" for reference) and was curious if anyone knew any other musicians like her that they could suggest? Also, is there anywhere that sells music specific to this style of genre? Thanks for all the help!
enyfour5
Check out Ella Fitzgerald, you would dig her. as for finding that type of music somewhere, I wish I had the answers because I would be right there with you.
Satan
www.bluenote.com should cover late-30's and onward as far as jazz goes. I know they're working on re-issuing a ton of killer stuff.

Satan
also, your jazz essentials are Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and so on and so forth. Anyway, best of luck on your search. Edit, there you go : http://www.bluenote.com/vinylreissues.html
kamalatapes
Try posting an ad on craigslist I know a lot of people don't want to burden their families with their collections as they are near death
mameeshkamowskwoz
I can't speak to the artist you cited, but I've been looking for Raymond Scott these days.Everyone's heard Powerhouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaC0vNLdLvY&feature=kp (if it doesn't sound familiar give it a minute or so) But I'm obsessed with the song The Penguin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo0JrbbiavI&feature=kp (it's sampled in Disseminated by Soul Coughing and was used in the episode of The Oblongs when Milo gets the dog Scotty) I'm having a hell of a time tracking down the comps of his 78s from the 30s for a reasonable price. There are BINs around 100-140 on the bay, but I'd rather not drop that much cash.I almost got 2 of the 3 comps for 15 bucks on eBay Monday, but someone sniped me. fought_piranhas
Not sure if this exactly what you're looking for but I enjoy a lot of early 20th century music and find that John's Old Time Radio podcast (http://www.eastriverstringband.com/radioshow/) is pretty interesting. Some shows may be more of interest (when it's a jazz/blues theme show). There's a also a pretty good group on FB for 78 collectors (https://www.facebook.com/groups/78rpmclub). somethingvinyl
I personally hate early jazz outside of a small amount of trad and dixie, but love 50-60's jazz (spiritual, free, bop). There's a thread for all hat:http://boards.vinylcollective.com/topic/86586-jazz-music-records-thread/page-6?hl=jazz#entry1834066IMO, blues that was created in 30's and 40's was infinitely more interesting than jazz during that time. Unless you're familiar with the stuff I linked and don't care for it, I recommend checking it out... I think it's great and he ended up working with some jazz greats (Kenny Burrell) and later became a pioneer of electronic music working with people like Moog.
